  • Valve shim library

Maximan contacted me a couple of weeks ago, and offered up a set of shims, ranging from 220-310. He mentioned a sort of library or bank be started with them. If you need a few shims, you could exchange your un-needed ones for the sizes you need. You would be responsible for all shipping, but the shims will be free. PM me for my mailing address. When you find the shipping cost to send yours to me, then include a check for that same amount, and I'll re-use your mailer (if possible) and send the new ones either the same day I recieve them, or the next, life permitting.

This is a great idea. My only concern is that commonly used sizes will eventually be replaced the the less used.

John could keep an eye on it. When someone needs one, he could give them a small list of the ones that were low, and have them send one of those in exchange.

        Guys,

This exchange program makes so much sense it's scary.

Did some shopping around and here's what I found:

        BikeBandit $14.06 each + $6 shipping = $34.12 (bandits!)

        CycleRecycle $4.95 each + $6 shipping = $15.90

I just came from the post office where I plunked down a whopping $2.60 postage ($1.30 each way) to mail two shims!

          shims

          (801) 485-0156

will give you a shim for $5 if you give him the core. Shipping is reasonable. I was in California and he had some needle jets for my carbs and sold me this rare item for $5/each.

            Valve Shims for XS1100

When I need valve shims for my XS1100G, I go to the local BMW dealer in Orange/Anaheim Calif, Irv Shiever. I went yesterday and traded six (6) shims for $5.00 plus tax. That's a lot less then BikeBandit.

BTW, for years I got all of my Yamaha and Honda MC parts from Zanotti Motors, but now get all parts from BikeBandit. BikeBandit has good prices and I get most parts in 3-4 days, as BB is in San Diego, CA 150 mi from me. AMA members get 5% discount from BB.

New Place with lots of shims

              Hi,
Over here in Riverside CA on 1575 University Ave. 92507.
              The ph # is (951) 683-8839
The place is Callaway motorsports and they have 4 gigantic tray tubs of valve shims. I went over and picked up a 255 and a 260 today cause my engine was "tick'n", they charge $5 per shim and don't require a trade in of the old one.

                Local shop

Hi. I found out that Supuki uses the same shims. Went down to a local repair shop and got 2 shims for 4.95 a piece. They didn't have a lot of them, but they had the ones I needed.

Suzuki shims are smaller but Kawasaki shims are the same.

What I'm still kicking myself over is that I had a big handful of these shims from working in a shop that didn't exchange shims and I donated them to stock at the next shop I worked for... I'm slowly building a personal shim collection and since I'm planning to keep my XS for a long time, I'm considering getting a shim assortment from K&L Supply The shims drop to under 5 bucks a pop in a kit.

It may have been a while since you've played with them.

...At least you remembered that for some reason they won't work.

The Suzuki shims are larger... 29.5mm

As they say the memory is the first thing to go but I can't remember what the second thing is. )

The really weird ones were the KZ750 twin that doesn't share shims with anything else.

Valve Shim Shortage in the library

I did another valve adjustment during my annual tune-up. I needed a 280 and only could find a 285. I have a micrometer and wondered if I could sand it down. I used some bodywork sandpaper ~400, 200 & 60 and in about 10 minutes it was down to the right size - saving me lots of time.

There's a new librarian in town

And her name is Wildkat. She will be running the shim library from now on, so please send any requests to her.
                            Thanks y'all.
