Chop' had a look again, the swingarm will only move over 15mm, not 20mm, so that idea grinds to a halt, looks like cutting off the pivot point, maybe leaving the 3 short tubes on it, and re-welding it further out somehow, depending on how wide the swingarm is

      pivot offsetting

I know how I am going to offset the pivot point now. Will cut three tubes at a diagonal from the backside and weld to the front. Think this will be the way...chop

This will also make room for the swingarm u-joint housing.

XSchop, I've been reading along and I have a question; what is the aim of this project? better looks, handling, acceleration? It's starting to look like a major re-do? To get the swingarm back in perfect alignment will take a fixture or jig to be accurate. the biggest gains in roadholding/handling will come from modern forks and wheels. I to want radial tires on my XS11. I'm not trying to discourage but maybe a late 70s/ early 80s Suzuki GS1000 is what you're building? I know that's like cussing on this board so I'll keep it to a minimum.

              full mailbox

hey denny, your mailbox is full. I have found an extra shaft for you and is already at the machinist....No one replied back about putting one shaft into a different housing. I may be wrong, but I think as long as your output shaft shims are put back in, everythings kosher?

                Thanks,

You have the jump on me, the spacer is going to take a bit of time to setup. The first one is always the toughest. Aluminum stock should show up early next week.

I was thinking, if this shaft extension works, why couldn't we splice together a M/D shaft and a chain drive output shaft? It would be very easy to add bearing bosses to this spacer. With two spacers and real long bolts, this could be a nice chain drive conversion. Just a thought.

Den your R1 wheels' sprocket will most likely align with the XS middle drive 'as is' with no need for shaft extensions or pivot point alterations, ideal centreline to inside sprocket measurement for the back wheel is around 115mm. Gary, the advantage of a fat wheel - good looks, good looks, and good looks. Advantage of shaftdrive - reliable, quiet, clean, non-maintenance. Advantage of chaindrive - way lighter, more power at the tyre.

                    chain drive

I am not above doing a chain drive if I don't have to mess with rewelding pivot points. However, you still need to change the S/A. I still would be interested in the VFR single sided S/A.The blue streak needs a fatty however accomplished....You could definitly machine a sprocket carrier if you can do the spacer.....would still need a modified shaft.....chop

I think Swing Arm modification are a given for any of the drive changes we have discussed.

A single sided S/A would be an interesting challange.

Greetings y'all. I opted for this solution (already shown above): FJR swingarm. Adding another pivot point and keeping the overall structure of the frame intact.

                          back from the yamaha graveyard

I went to the shop.checked a bunch of different measyrements, including the r1 wheel and the fjr1300 wheel, swingarm, and axle bolt. the axle bolt is perfect for the wide swingarm mod. That fjr S/A is 21" long compared to 17" xs11. I don't think I would use the swingarm though, just mod the xs11 S/A....chop

                            Hi Mathh

Been keeping an eye on the mods being done here. Love to tinker now and then, but kinda cool to watch others like pggg and chop work through the problems....

Would like to see pic of your bike. Hows it handle and what rubber you got on it???

Hey Mathh. Welcome to the site!

I take it that heavily modded XS is your bike? Incredible, man...just incredible. Is that a hydraulic clutch on there?

If so, I would be REALLY interested in seeing how you did it. Would be better in another thread, though. Wouldn't want to hijack this one.

                              Amazing work!!

Swingarm length, that's one of the major hold backs of the XS11 design. It's way too short, and even if it were to be replace/lengthened then the overall wheelbase grows to an un managable or rather very unsporting 62"+ At that point I would want to take 3" off the front end part of the wheelbase. That way I could de-rake it to 25 degrees etc. Then at some point it gets to be an FJ1100? Hummm?
