 Tom,

The Super Ténéré ES has a 4-stroke engine ...

 It's a DOHC, fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, 1199cc inline 2-cylinder with 4 valves per cylinder.

It also has shaft drive, a 6.1 gal. fuel tank, cruise control, electronically-adjusted suspension, and a 6-speed transmission ...

Looks and sounds like it would be a blast to ride! Marco Marco

 Honda CB1100

I really like the "new" CB1100, too.

 The "Deluxe" model sports a 4-into-2 exhaust versus the Standard's 4-into-1 ...

The "Deluxe" has a ½ gal. larger fuel tank compared to the Standard ... and, as mentioned, ABS ...Marco

 Chain

the chain gives you more options for speed VS MPG.
It's a retro in new pants.
Wonder what the stock MPG. is ?76 XS650 C ROADSTER

 Hey, Unca D -

Based on the few reviews I've read about the CB1100 ...

It seems that if you ride the bike leisurely, you can expect close to 50 MPG. Get aggressive, and gas mileage can drop below 40 MPG.

But the consensus seems to be an average of 42-44 MPG.Marco

 Chain vs. Shaft

 Well, Tom ...

Chain drive has 2 big advantages over shaft drive: less weight and greater efficiency.

Chain drive is a much more efficient means of transferring power to the rear wheel ... power loss is minimal compared to shaft drive.

Another advantage is the ease with which you can change final drive gearing ...

Simply swap out the rear and/or countershaft sprocket(s) for others with more/less teeth depending on your preference for shorter/taller gearing.

Chain maintenance is so easy ... and there are some great lube/wax products out there with minimal-to-no "fling-off".

 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shaft drive? IMO, the biggest advantages over chain drive are: longevity and longer intervals between maintenance.

With simple oil changes and occasional attention to the splines, a shaft drive could last 2-to-300,000 miles (or longer), as long as it's not abused.

And, of course, it is very clean! But there is that pesky torque reaction you get with almost all shaft-driven bikes (to a greater or lesser degree).

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've owned several different bikes, some with chain drive, some with shaft drive.

I like them both ... I really don't have a preference for one over the other. Marco Marco
