The only time I ever saw mine go up to 15 plus is when my voltage regulator was bad. I honestly can't remember what my tach was doing though. I replaced the voltage regulator and everything went back to normal.

Well Jonny, it looks like either obtain another tach and try it, or continue going through the wiring, cleaning all related connectors. At this point it could be either or maybe even something else. Operating on a tamper proof tach might not be for you. It's an extremely finicky task.Last edited by bikerphil; 12-25-2024, 12:15 AM.2H7 (79) owned since '89

The tach itself is reading off one of the stator windings which would be an AC voltage somewhere in the 50v+ range.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

LAB3, no offense intended by my previous post, just factual knowledge.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

I identify as a man but according to the label on a package of Stauffers Baked Lasagne I'm actually a family of four!

It only drops after trying to crank the motor. 14.81 is also good which shows that the alternator and the voltage regulator/rectifier are doing there job. When you stated 15ish that indicated exceeding 14ish which is not good. Back to checking your settings on what Phil said to check on your tachometer problems.

I'm going to Lowes to get some circuit cleaner to try and clean out as the one post said cleaning the two plugs with those W and Br and G color wires under the fuse box solved his tach issue.
Just a shot in the dark.

ANYWAY I used the contact cleaner on the two connections suggested in the maintenance post by XS11 from 2002. Nope. Didn't work. I suppose I'll now have to try to figure out how to follow his instructions on what voltage should be
on each wire. Rats.
I did check the battery off the trickle charger last night- 12.89 now so I guess the battery is still good.
