Hello XS11 Family

I'll be sure to tell Anita and my dad hello for you all today. Scott, Billy and Mack thanks for the kind words. My old man is super stubborn, and for those of who have been afforded the many hours of conversation my dad is known for trapping people in, you will also attest to his vast knowledge and not just Carb work even though that's kind of his thing. Batteries are too.

In any time like this it's so nice to have such support, and you all are very wonderful and 2 days ago dad was telling me all about the Navy bike in one of our many re entry conversations about my old 1950 Chevy 2 ton.... an era of vehicle that dad is a wealth of knowledge on.

I will be heading to the hospital soon to see him. Last night his blood pressure dropped and at 0300 his heart enzymes had climbed from the high 20s to the hi 40s. Both of which are not good. Most of us are normally at zero. So something g in terms of a stressful event took place with his heart. However at this point, he is now holding his own blood pressure without pharmaceuticals. Hopefully his enzymes will peak soon and start decreasing in time for surgery first thing Monday morning at 0730. So basically the old man's oil pump is a little weak, and he's low on oil (blood platelets). He is going to need some high temp grey (his favorite) and a gasket at some point to fix his pump. Not sure if there are mercury sticks the old man would approve for tuning that old carb of his up (his lungs + cigarettes will always co exist).

As far as the woman who pulled out in front of him, she dumped her truck at a local body shop not long after the accident I think in an attempt to get it fixed. Johnny Law found it and have identified her. From the local chatter here (small town), it sounds like her family and boyfriend have disowned her and turned her away. Last I heard she is hiding out still here locally, and Anita's advocate at the police station assured us all not to worry. They have brought down 2 of the best investigators from Glenwood Springs to handle the case. There is a felony now against her and a warrant issued. I give it less than a week before she is found or turns herself in.

Hey Chad,

First, thanks for the updates. I will be visiting my local Red Cross donation center tomorrow AFTER a good full breakfast so that I'll have plenty of protein to support my whole blood donation! I encourage any other Xsives who are physically capable, and not restricted due to other health issues to donate ASAP....in fact I CHALLENGE those to POST on here when they have donated!

Secondly, I'm a little concerned about Brant's heart changes, hopefully they are just reflective of the total body stress that he's experiencing, and will return to normal soon. Chad, I am in the medical field, not a doctor, but an ex-Navy/hospital corpsman, my wife is a nurse, and am familiar with trauma and the other problems that arise from it. I understand that Brant is having bleeding issues with the fractured pelvis and femur, and that they have him almost totally sedated to keep him both comfortable and out of pain as much as possible. But my other concern is the increased risks of throwing clots from his legs that can get to his lungs/heart/brain. When folks have serious lower extremity injuries that require them to remain prone for extended periods of time, the doctors will usually both apply compression stockings or other devices....have seen fancy pneumatic controlled devices that simulate the muscular contractions that help to push the blood back up to the heart from the legs to keep it moving so that it doesn't become stagnant and form clots due to not moving much. Brants pelvis and femur fractures complicate this, and giving him extra platelets to help slow/stop the bleeding there, could cause problems otherwise....so I just mention this as a topic of discussion between your family and the doctor's just to ensure that they are thinking about this aspect and not to narrowly focusing on just stopping the bleeding!?

And yes, this is the perfect time to STOP smoking, he'll have gotten the nicotine out of his system so that he won't have the CHEMICAL craving anymore, and it will just be the habitual physical activity of handling the cigs that he'll have to get over/avoid/replace with something else.... chewing gum, or enjoying a lolipop...aka Telly Savalas as Kojak. Besides, from these photos, he could stand to put on a few pounds anyways!!

And finally, on a more humorous note, thank goodness he was on the ST and not the XS11....those parts are getting way too hard to find nowadays!!

Thanks for all the info it just came in very handily. Its good to know your background as I was an Aircraft Mechanic on the f18 E/F in the Navy. Tonight I took what you had mentioned about him possibly throwing a clot and applied my new found knowledge tonight. Dad was having issues tonight as nurses were trying to suction his lungs. They were hitting something soft and are concerned enough that they just ordered a chest xray. I asked them if there was a possibility if he had thrown a blood clott from his pelvis or leg that made it to his lungs. The response I receven was good in that they assured me it would be very clear if that is what was taking place. I'm sitting here now at the hospital as I just picked up Anita's daughter from the airport and brought her to the hospital and sent her and Anita home. I'm going to wait until they do the chest xray before going to bed myself.

Thank you T.C. and I'll let you know what comes ftom the xray results. They did increase the pressure provided to the lungs to keep the one from collapsing as much and increased his oxygen for the time being.

Jeez! Here I am trying to go on a ride and ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE! Brant, You need to heal as there are too many of us needing your sage advise! It's been a few years since an eyeball, but we at least keep in touch on here. HEAL FAST my friend!
Chad, thanks for the updates! Tell your dad Ray will NOT answer any questions unless he does as directed by the Dr.s and gets well! Let Anita know Penny and I will keep them both in our prayers.

I'm glad you were able to join us here, and appreciate your updates about your Dad very much.

Having been through what the family also endures when their loved one is in this type of hospital situation myself a few times, I can totally relate to what you all are going through now. Just manning the flood of phone calls and re-telling the details over and over again alone will wear one out. By you posting updates here for us, it should help Anita stay off the phone some.

Your Dad and I have gotten to be pretty close friends within the last couple of years, and I'm heartbroken this has happened to him. You all are in my constant thoughts and prayers, and I sincerely wish him a speedy recovery!

Your Dad's a great man, and he's been most kind to me! I appreciate him very much. He and Anita were gracious host to the 4 of us who recently visited them when we rode through GJ on our way out to Zion. Your Dad lead us on a guided tour of great mountain roads on our way out, and Anita had us a terrific home-cooked meal waiting on us when we arrived. Boy, was it awesome!

I wish I had the ability to make all this go away, and ease his suffering, but I can't. Instead, I just want him to know how hard I'm praying and pulling for him right now. I'm doing the same for your entire family, too.

Thanks for helping and giving Anita a break, too. I know she really needs that!
Hang in there, and keep reminding him he has a big support team here that's rooting for him to win this fight!

Blood Donation Challenge

His name is Brant Personeous by the way at St Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado. I donated blood today as replacement for one of his units. The blood bank will need that name and hospital info if you decide to do the same. The blood bank lady told me you can give credited pints for up to a year after use so I will do it again in 8 weeks and my sons will be donating this next weekend. He will be using more blood and platelets likely when he has surgery so please consider giving if you are able.

Blood is expensive and its one thing we can do from anywhere in the country to help. If you have friends and family that donate please ask that their next one be for Brant.

I just checked my account on the UBS web site and I was over five gallons donated since 2003 and on the way to six when I had the heart attack. It would be a very bad idea for me to donate blood and I'd have to lie on the pre-draw questionnaire.

Tomorrow is the big day

Hey xs11 family. Thank you so much for the thoughtful responses and I'll be sure to tell him Ray! Bob I have heard much about you and am glad my dad has such great friends through his xs11 family.

I know many of you are more like me and a picture does a thousands words (sorry for the colooquialism). I thought seeing him in his battle would help some understand the gravity of the dynamic situation as we go into tomorrow's surgery at 0730. I don't think they will cancel it again as he has had a fairly consistent weekend so far.

I've read dad some of your posts, not sure if he knows I'm here but it can't hurt. And I told him so many of you have donated blood towards his ongoing battle and tomorrow's surgery. I can't say enough how much this means to our family. The outpouring of help has been so wonderful and has made it so us kids can focus on being here for dad.

I'll be sure to give an update for tomorrow morning here and good news is his troponin levels have dropped from his peak at 43 to 35 as of today. The nurses and bedding technology are doing a great job at moving him into different positions to keep pressure points changing as he lies there. He is pretty puffy as he is retaining a lot fluid but they have him on lascics to help him rid the extra fluid. Because of that though he is about to take another unit of blood tonight to aid with blood pressure. When I walked in tonight and started talking he was moving quite a bit. He has also started caughing up the secretions that have settled in his lungs on his own every so often today which the suction tube in his lungs gets out.
