What did you do to your bike today?

  • I changed her motor, middle gear, and final drive oils, getting some help with a new bracket for my fairing and when it is ready I will be changing the fork oil and remounting my fairing (pacifico), waiting for some tires to arrive and will re grease the back bearings and the shaft bearings and mount the new back tire. My girl will be all refreshed and ready for lots of summer riding. In the mean time she is still ready for strutting around town with her front end bare. I do love the wind in my face.

      • Monday I stopped in Grand Junction while on my way home from Denver. Met up with Brant (Motoman) had a great conversation with him. It's good to meet with people on the forum to get to know them better. Great guy with some good stories. Next time I need to have my bike to go for a ride.

        • My clutch shim actually worked. It has stopped slipping! Finally! It may be helped by the fact that is has warmed up a bit, reducing power output a bit. I still want to replace my friction discs but now I can wait till winter.

            ........not a thing.........but it was a real surprise and pleasure to have met Ty(tcoop) and his wife! Definitely some nice XSessive folks!.

              Today I tested my fifth replacement of the left side main bearing seal. The day before I tested with my first of 2 duel lip seals I purchased. I cleaned out the 3rd seal I had replaced that was leaking with the high temp permatex sealant and put in the first dual lip seal. Cleaned every thing final cleaning with acetone on Q tip and put small amount of permatex blue sealant on the seal and let it get tacky. Put small bead of sealant in the recess where seal goes into and used a seal driver to tap the seal evenly in. Wiped off the thin smear of sealant around the seal and left to sit overnight. Yesterday cam in started bike on center stand fan running and allowed to warm up no leaks. Put bike in fast idle about 2000 rpms and allowed to run about 15 minutes not a drip. Reeved bike a few times to about 5000K and black smoke coming out at seal area. Took off mag pick ups and seal had been pushed out till it rubbed making smoke but not one drip of oil. Back to store got Indian head sealant and Permatex liquid metal filler. Cleaned out all old seal material as before put indian head sealant on seal to get tacky put bead of permatex blue into recess painted outer band of recess with Indian head sealant. Pushed seal 2/3 way in Painted Liquid metal filer on edge of seal and outer metal about 1/8 inch. Drove seal in tight and repainted with liquid metal filler about 1/8 inch onto seal and aluminum. Did 3 coats of Liquid metal filler. Let sit over night.


              For the first time ran the bike near an Hour at 3000 Rpms Fan on of course reeved engine run it hard up and down road no leaks no problems have my legs crossed this time. And yes I have checked for slack in bearing in all directions and there is none tight solid so its not crank or bearing that give problem but oil pressure pushing the seal
              To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

              • Ron, check and see if your crankcase vent is plugged up. That shouldn't be making enough pressure to push those seals out.

                Oh, and what did I do to my bike today? I hit the starter button and rode it. Sunny and 76 today.

                • Got it out to enjoy the weather!
                  Tomorrow, I start cleaning up the newsed Midnight bars to put on her... then we're going out to enjoy the weather again.

                    • My left boot has been getting oily for a while, so decided to look tonight and yup.. leaking crank seal. Slapped a new one back in, but noticed some side play to the crank,(In and out) telling me the saddle crank bearing is worn. Up and down, left to right seems solid still. Hopefully the new seal will hold for a while. Maybe this winter I'll do some checks on things and maybe freshen the motor up with some new crank bearings. I should have kept better track, but I'm estimating I've got somewhere @ at least 125-150k miles since I rebuilt it last.

                      Or maybe I'll just keep riding it and wiping the oil off my boot for a while. lol.

                        ......maybe carrying a couple extra new seals aboard will scare it into submission......least for a few more LD rides.

                        • Make sure you have all the fill plugs tight Tod.

                          • Cleaned off the base gasket from the cylinder and the cases. They were very hard to get off, even with CRC Gasket Remover. Put the valves back into the heads with new seals. Checked the new ring gaps. Now I just need to start putting it together.
