Yes, under the normal weight of the '80G the hollow feet started to collapse which was making it a chore to get it up on the center stand.
Now with it being full dressed and me 11yrs. older since the last time I rode it I figure a little POM couldn't hurt.

Kinda like the Zigfield Follies. He bought his dancers frilly panties to perform in so they would feel special even though no one could see said panties. I polished mine up too because a greasy, gritty oil pan is not fittin' for these bikes.
On another note, I had to remove my tank because the PO repair on pinholes was crap and the red tank sealer did not hold. Not only did it not hold, but it was breaking down and coming out with the gas. I'm in the market for a good XJ tank and fuel level sending unit. I ruined mine tonight trying to clean it up.

                    Hi Schming,
I wonder if that is what has happened to mine. Another thing for me to investigate. Thanks for the info.

Phil remember your bike sits too low for your stand make it longer and you will never get it on the rear stand. I think you just have a stand from another year/model.

                        • hi all, some of you may recall, i joined this forum recently to get some advice for my friend's XS1100 which needed a lot of work, and thanks to all the articles and forum response, it made my life a heck alot easier. The bike has returned to its rightful (yet neglectful) owner a few weeks ago, and i would like to chronicle what I've done to it with your help.

                          from the front to back:

                          1) Front Oil:
it wasn't the 'air fork' model, so it was quite straight forward. I used the "plastic bag" trick as stated in the FAQ to capture all the old oil, and sure enough there was no mess at all.

I also used the "push with palm" method to reattach the top fork cap, which was indeed helpful.
                          One silly sidenote: while changing the fork oil with the bike on the side stand, i didn't lift the weight off the front wheel, so while I was unscrewed the second/last fork cap, the whole front fork compressed and collapsed and the bike fell its side :facepalm;

                          2) Valve Adjustment:
quite easy actually, the XS1100 sure had a lot more space to move and work around than my tiny ninja 250. The hardest part was to hunt down the valve shim of appropiate size (for those in Los Angeles, Moto Technica in East LA has some but not alot for 4 bucks or so, and Iluminati in Hollywood/Sunset/Silver Lake has alot, but charges $10 for one, or $6 if you exchanged with your old one. One online site has them for 6 bucks but the 8 bucks shipping kills it). I ended up only need to buy 4, as 1 valve was within spec, and 3 of the intake sides went on to the exhaust. The bike was noticeably smoother and quieter after the adjustment.
i didn't have the valve bucket holder/compression tool, and was a bit hesitant to remove the cams in fear of losing cam chain's tension at the bottom cog and fear of losing realigning cams to the correct timing should I remove the cam. So, instead, i removed all the 10 cam caps and LOOSEN (not removed) the camchain tensioner (when the crank pointer is at C), and then pry the cam to 'cock' to create enough space to remove the shims. A bit scary to turn the crankshaft at this point, but it all worked out after all. I didn't replace the gasket at this point, and no leaks so far that i know off.

                          3) brakes:
took out the old brake pads, and sees this:

yikes. Also took out and cleaned the brake caliper:

yikes. Then cleans the brake reservoir and the brake lines. Due to time and budget, i couldn't get new-ish brake lines or upgrade to stainless steel's. Changing pads was straightforward, however, it seems like i am missing the screw that holds the pads to the caliper holder, but the pads seems to still be held in place.

enough writing for today, more to come...

True enough Greg. But I believe some of the pictures at Deals Gap "Tail of the Dragon" show bike leaned over far enough to show off parts on the bottom. Last weekend I rode Florida's "Tail of the Gator" 318 miles with 11 curves...not the same, but WARM.

                                Good Luck wrenching,
