    • Finally fixed the damage to the lid of the top trunk and painted it to match the tank and the rest of the painted parts on the bike, just need to redo the side covers, the saddlebag lids and the side panels of the top trunk before time to get pictures for the next calendar.

No pictures yet, but those will come in time for the calendar.

Oh, and then I rode it 123 miles for my annual HS alumni reunion ride this weekend.

        ...NOT!

Spent the last three days smoothing and prepping all the polished aluminum off the XJ for buffing. Tomorrow I'll slowly put on my 'who's the black guy at Steve's house?' disguise while buffing....

Preview.... not polished yet, but ready to buff...

Discovered another reason I don't like the Special forks; they're waaay harder to prep for buffing compared to standard units..

        • Checked the valve clearance, and used the surface grinder on the shims to get them all within half a thou of each other.
Also found out that the heel of some of the cam lobes is not concentric with the center of the cam shaft, which translates into the fact that the clearance changes as the lobe goes from 90 deg to the stem axis up to in line with it. Not all lobes, but one thousandth difference on a couple of them.
So, since the good book said that the lobe should be pointed away from the valve bucket, that's where I measured it.
I'll re sync the carbs tomorrow, and see if the valve job got rid of the 3500 rpm buzz. CZ

            • painted the tank and side covers for my wifes XJ1100, Mounted the turn signals where they should be and changed the front tire. Next it will be getting some of the black off the engine and polishing the handle bars grab rail and engine side covers.

Well, the surface grinder was just sitting there, and I figured that two thousandth jump was a little XScive, so what the hell?
I ground on the back side, and remarked them with Jasco rust converter, used like lettering paint. Let it set for a few minutes, washed it off, and permanent marking.
So now, for example, instead of a 290 shim, I have a 288.
Does the buzz detract from longevity of the engine? What is it, out of balance? It sure is annoying, being right in the 60 to 75 mph range. It seems to only be noticable over a third throttle.

                  • Buzz? What buzz? Mine has a little of it I guess, just enough to let you know the motor is running. It's so insignificant I hardly ever notice it. Never makes my hands or feet tingle or go to sleep, like my friend's KZ900.

                      • All I did to my bike today was sit on it for a bit. Tomorrow I get to ride it to a meeting downtown. Makes meetings endurable. Sunday I usually ride with a guy or two. My friend has a KTM 990 Adv. Kong can keep up with him when he's anywhere near the legal limit, but it gets fast quick! Sounds awesome doing it too.
Kong gets me there and back every time, @ a total investment equal to 2 or 3 of his payments. He's running well and I have him set up pretty good I think. My evaluation of that is based on the abundance of my lack of experience with any other bikes. My confidence in him is bolstered by the occasional thread on XS11.com about "my new bike is OK, but it's no XS11!"

Tomorrow I'm pulling the carbs to find out where they're leaking and taking apart the petcocks to hopefully fix those leaks also. Tired of smelling like gas after a ride.
