  • I fixed my 4 ways, sort of. Turns out the contacts in the switch are pretty burned up. Got them cleaned up a bit so the work sort of, but I'm either gonna have to figure out a way to rebuild the the contacts in the switch or I'm going to need a new switch. They work sometimes, and sometimes they don't. I had thought that the soldering job I had done on the wires was not good enough and that they had come loose, but it turns out the contacts the wires solder to are badly pitted.

    • Repaired a growing hard-starting problem

This morning as I was rebuilding a '79SF ignition I had to open up Columbo to see which way the three ignition pickup coil wire retaining clamps are supposed to go on the pickup coil plate. When I removed the timing cover I discovered that Columbo's mechanical ignition advance was starting to throw a little rust and the ring bearing on the pickup needed some fresh grease.

Okay! Don't whinge, just fix it and get back to work on the '79 Special!

I had added a '79F vacuum advance from my parts bike to change the vacuum advance curve on Columbo but as I began to remove it I found that the hole in the vacuum advance arm for the pickup plate pin was worn and a little sloppy. I tried to reshape the hole and close it up to fit but it was too far gone and the end snapped off. Adios bolt-on performance mod ....

Since I was already in it that far I checked and reset the pickup coil air gap so Columbo has the original factory ignition settings and timing parts again.

Tomorrow I'll re-detune everything for the factory timing curves but for today the hard-starting problem is gone and the engine sounds happy again when it's started cold.

      Yay!

      • Well I guess it doesn't count as today but in the past few weeks I have put on some new spitfires as the battleaxes don't wear for shoot. New to me tubeless rear tire with a newer rear rotor. Greased the final drive and hub gears. Just need to drop the oil and filter and I'm ready for summer. The spitfires feel a little crisper on the road then those stupid vrated other tires. And if I get 4k out of the rear I will be happy

        • I added a headlight modulator to the Banshee. I had a few issues with the manufacturer, first one did not shutoff after sunset. Bad news trying to ride at night with a strobe light for a headlight, and then one of their stupid connectors came loose and shorted out the circuit, so I rode three miles home with no headlight in the dark of night.

Anyway, got a replacement unit. Works well now. Shuts off modulation when I pull into the garage in the middle of the day. And I think it already saved my bacon once. A young lady was pulling out on me on a four lane road, then looked my way and stopped dead in her tracks. Blocked two lanes of traffic from the other direction rather than pull in front of me. Think it has that police theme to it.

Anyway, I like it, woks well, but I would never use their connectors. I cut the wires and hard wired it all.

              • I hit a fist-sized rock on the highway at 50mph. Heck of a jolt. The tire stayed on and so did I. The rim has a flat section now at the point of impact on the left side, but the tire is still holding air. Will probably end up replacing both rim and tire

                • got the headlight off

eventually ....... trying to trace electrical issue that is causing no headlights or turn signals. brake and rear work fine.

took it for an illegal spin though, up the street and back.

                  fun.

                    • Got the new Dyna coils, & wires installed

Finished up around 1:00 last night. Had other family stuff had to do 1st. The coils & wires are really top notch looking & the coils are nice & heavy. Lots of winding- way heavier than my Mikesxs black ones. All fit fine, just had to make 4 right angled brackets to hagn them up with. I guess I should have done this the 1st time - but live & learn. It took about a week to get the package from Z1 Enterprises in the states to my door. Taking it to work tommorow & everyday from now on by the thunder - Long live the Midnight Special - Dan

                      • drained mid and rear drive

I finally gave up on finding my feeler gauges to check my valves so I ran out to get a new one and some fluids and other supplies. got back just at sunset and figured I was gong to do - something - and lost the light before I could refill. methinks that stuff has been in there a long time! it had a nice axle grease like layer at the bottom. there where some metal filings on the magnet as well. I had to do it cold, so I think i will do it again soon - goop is still in there. if by the third time I get more filings... then I'll worry. Who am I kidding - I will worry anyway, and just add it to the list.
