Fired up the rig to go to cast my ballot in the General Election. My choice has a good chance but even if she's not elected, by voting I have earned the right to whine about whoever did. The polling station is in the local school and the school band was in the front school yard serenading the voters; seems it's coincidentally also Canada Music Appreciation Day.

My 1980 English Assembled Std XS11
A nice shinny black frame , fresh from the powder coaters now resides in my garage.
Along side it is a full set of crome, fresh from the crome plating shop.
And ......inches away sits some shinny alloy bits, home from the polishers.
Visibile in the background is my partially rebuit engine on a small pallet, happy to be home after a visit to the head doctor for fresh seals, gaskets, decarb and the head getting a small surface plane.....opps....
Behind on a shelf sit an maroon and white tank, sparkling with its gold pinstips, a pair of white side covers proudly boasting XS1100 sit on top of a perfect condition seat.
MMMMM........I have a lovely big kitset taking shape...
The brakes are due to go to the brake doctor, the wheels to the mag wheeel reconditioner, the exhaust to the trash can, its not worth using..
A new 4-2 system has been ordered from Two Brothers Exhaust builders for the small fee of NZ$1800.00 .....

Some details...
I decided to get rid of the chrome look to the fork badge - more with the theme - so it got painted 2 tone Ivory/Burnt Orange...
I painted the front calipers with some gloss black caliper paint as I am rebuilding them (no pics sorry) and cleaned out the old MC - a rebuild kit and it will be good to go as a spare or for the future... I ordered a new one from MikesXS (16mm) to get the straight look versus the crazy angle my Special sat at on regular non-rototiller bars. I ordered new CB750 bars that have a tiny bit less pullback (3") to put my wrists where I want them.
Can't wait! The next week I have to go to CA and its killing me not to be riding this week in the great weather.

Been thrashing on the SG I'm rebuilding for sale... got the engine cases/barrels painted, painted the frame and swingarm, powdercoated most of the rest of the small bits, and spent the last three days cleaning, rebuffing, and painting the wheels (jeez, those things were nasty; talk about baked-on crud..). Next up: polishing the engine covers, fork lowers, and rebuilding the forks...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

I was getting ready to shoot the color on my tank and right as I grabbed the tank and was starting to pull the trigger on the paint gun the cable the tank was hanging from broke and the tank fell about 4 feet nose first into the cement floor.

I have a working gas gauge again. I ordered a 7807 from digikey, and it's been sitting there thumbing it's nose at me. I pulled the fairing, pulled the tach, pulled the little black box off, cut the wires off and soldered them to the 7807 and mounted it to the bottom of the tach (it's got an isolated tab so it's safe to heatsink in direct in this case) and covered the leads with RTV to protect them and to keep them from moving around and reassembled everything. Fired it up and my gauge works again after over a year of none operation. Not that it's really that big a deal, I know by mileage when I need to fuel up, but it's still nice to have the gauge working there.Cy

so Dylan can ride - took it out to "test" it for awhile. wheee!!
i forgot how light and nimble they felt compared to the big brother - wanted to do some motocross!
anyway he will be happy and if i finish mine tomorrow we can both ride and all be happy...
so many riders out today...
john
ps - remind me to never pull off the forks again if i can help it - what a PITA to get back on alone - had to take wheel and forks completely apart to get back on - but upside is bearings got greased!John is in an anonymous city with an Alamo (N29.519227,W-98.678980)

Finished my first ever valve adjustment! (Thanks Kat! ) Sync'd and colortuned afterward, and after re-installing the fairing/tank/bags, I swear the bike starts MUCH easier now! I didn't use the choke ('cause I forgot) and the engine roared to life with the first touch of the button! Idled perfectly right at 1000 rpm, until it warmed up a bit and raised to 1100. Makes me wish I had taken the time to do the valves when I first got the bike.1980 XS850SG - Sold

its alive! (sorta)
OK I got MY brakes and new bars and MC and stainless lines all hooked up. Took it for a test ride after jump starting it with the booster. Bars feel good. I need a LONG ride to really check it.
So got back and checked charge. Nope. Trickle charge while messing with pods for a couple hours. Nope.
Oh yeah I chamfered the carb airholes - thanks Big John!
Buy new battery and fill it and set on charger (its due this year just wasnt ready as I just bought new one for Rising Sun).
Use leftover acid in old battery - hah ! had to add about 16oz total water to all cells. No wonder why battery was weak. I am surprised it started and ran at all!!!
Anyway should be good with new one.
I tried to look at swapping back the airbox with a k&n filter - no way to get it in without pulling the carbs. I know its been said before, I just wanted to try. Pods back in place till I pull carbs.
Can't wait till MOM Rally next month!!
John
