  • Brakes and lots of other stuff

Today I primed my front brake calipers, rear brake bracket and the top of my triple tree. Calipers are going red with black in the recessed parts. Triple tree and bracket just going gloss black. Exciting, can't wait to get her all back together.

Last week got all oils changed, new bearings in the rear wheel, repacked the shaft with grease, greased up the triple tree bearings. Rear master cleaned and rebuilt. Gasket made for the auto tensioner, previously used yamabond and it didn't keep it from leaking, so bought a sheet of gasket and made my own. Been a little busy! Trying to get everything back together for a road trip with 3 buddies to the Outer Banks at the end of April.

    • Today I installed the OEM luggage rack that I got from crazy steve. If this is what he calls rusty, I'd hate to see what he calls good looking (this thing looks better than the rest of my bike). Got the trunk mounted and everything locked down and looking good. Took less than two hours from start to finish, removing the old thing I had on there and installing it and buttoning it up.

        • I sorted out my stripped frame and associated parts ready fro the sandblasters this week. Had fun removing the bearings off the tripple tree and swing arm all good .
I also picked up all the alloy bits from the polisher, looking good,
The crome work is also finished, had to recrome seveal bits, but most only needed a polish to bring them up nice.
I also visited my engine man to see how he was going, a bit of a delay due to our recent earthquake, but good news, the strip down of the top end revealed nothing needing to be repaired or replaced, so with a decarb and new seals etc, it should be all back togeather ready to install. yay no more oil leaks...

          • I put my old saddle bags on under the seat and then went for a quick ride. Didn't have much time so scrimped on safety by wearing just want I had on (capri pants, tennis shoes and no helmet) and not changing to something more appropriate. Certainly should be more responsible but the soft, warm morning air felt so good after our long bitter cold winter. When I got back I sat for a minute looking at my dirty bike, enjoying the quiet, and making promises for car repairs long put off, cleaning my bike, and especially lots of rides with my sons. Gathered myself together and went to the range for our bi-monthy cowboy action match. It was a very good Saturday.

            • Saturday I buttoned up the rear brake system with a new stainless caliper piston from OMP, new braided stainless line, and a thoroughly cleaned master cylinder. Now a very short stroke of the pedal and the pads pop against the disk. I suspect the difference in the brake feel will be dramatic.

                  Under the Vetter Trunk.

A Little further back, showing a little bit of the color changing of the paint job.

Got it all together and loaded a bit of stuff it in and took it for a short ride to test the balance of the whole thing. Gotta say I like it. I kept the portion of the grab rail that I still had on there even though I could see that would normally not be kept with the rack if the grab rail was intact. But with it being cut off like it was when the Vetter rig was installed it leaves a nice handle there towards the front just back of the rear shocks.

And one last shot from the other side that shows the underside of the rack a little bit better, plus with this angle you can see better the color being different from the other angle.

1978 xs1100 yup the motor is still there. and about 50% of the frame.
                          nothing else is xs11..
                          1978 E XS1100 purchased for =$600.00
crap load of time spent modifying it = Priceless
My bike has the XS motor but can't really call it XS11
(or at least it still looks like the XS motor)
it has about 50% of the frame left from the XS bike

                          • With a test light I'm A God

Man alive - I finally bought a test light from suggestions on the site. And I got my 1 yr old headlight - (had to run a separate line last year on a switch) and my tach - (never worked since I got the bike 3 yrs ago) working. I dug into the main harness (wouldn't of dreamed even doing that last year) but thanks to the site & many searches felt the confidence & now sported the sceptor of power - called a test light! I did get rido of the headlight relay right when i got the bike & good thing I did as the diode thing in the main harnerss had a broken wire - got rid of that. & also found the 3 way connnection mess with the red power wires from the starter/kill switch that are just crimped together loosely. This was giving me a weak conection to my starter relay & it wouldn't start. Also found a suspicous ground wire on the starter relay ( again all atributed to the "test light" from the gods or hardware store depending were you live) I also found many other weak or non-exsitant power going through my many power block connections that I didn't know existed - i did clean & die-electric grease all these when I got the bike. I know some may disagree but I went & wired "all" direct no blocks anywhere anymore, & I mean none = no more worries. When I hit the start button & my headlight worked both high & low beam with the control on the bars & my tach came to life at around 1200 rpm ( i had never seem my tach work ever) I pertnear **** & of course raised my "test light" high to the sky in defiance of all bike elec gremlins - as I have won & man what a feeling. Thx to the site for all the help - I gotta tach man!! So anyone else out there - take the plunge man & get a test light & "get the power" - I gotta ohm meter but thats still to confusing to me by myself & i still won without it - Dan
