Hey Cywelchjr: That was funny! I guess my arm was calibrated too,(used to just tighten by hand) until last night. Probably due to the heat hehe - Dan

"No, it needs something that can be fastened/bolted to on both the top and bottom'
The 'factory' vetter ones look like the trunk bunkees here:
http://www.craigvetter.com/pages/Onl...ent_Parts.html
However, you can use solid rubber blocks with a hole drilled through, and just bolt from top with a nut on the bottom.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

It doesn't need to. The rubber blocks are just to absorb shock. Vibration is not really an issue unless you want to carry nitro glycerin, or 3L soda bottles!
If you do as I recommended, just be sure not to 'crush' the rubber too much. This is why you use nylock nuts, so they don't come loose.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

If you're having a hard time finding those 'bunkees', try a Harley dealer or shop specializing in them. These are a common item on Harleys, used to mount the oil tanks and other bits. I think I paid $1.50 each the last time I picked some up.

Week ago today, fired it up after swapping out intake valves for Oregon Motorcycle Parts polished stainless valves. Also installed a V-Max cam chain tensioner. WOW! Those valves make a difference. Way more power than it's ever had. Roll-on wheelie in low. Plenty of top end power too. Fuel economy up from 30-32 to 36-41. Got 35 running 2 up with a 210# passenger. Absolutely amazing.1980 XS 11 Special: The King of Kong, 9th wonder of the world. Well, Monday I put some of that transparent orange tape over the turn signal to keep from getting a fixit ticket until I can get a new lens and screws. In all this I realized that they don't have the gasket in them either (the one still there doesn't as well) so I need to get the gaskets. Question here, can I use the ones from the front on the back? I have found some and I figure that I could at least use them as additional taillights back there, and maybe even add as brakelights doing what psychoreefer did on his, of course I would then need to find read lenses, but I guess I'm asking of both front and back on a standard use the same lens?
Oh, and today I look at it as I hobbled out to my ride to work (stupid tendinitis (in my Achilles tendon)). It looks like I won't be riding for a while, and it really suck because my local stealer has a big event this weekend I was hoping to attend.Cy

Now that I know there is a grainger near me, I have to find out what they carry, since they seem to have a lot of different ones available, maybe they carry one or more locally. Either way I think I can get them cheaper than from Craig Vetter and maybe even locally as soon as I can get over there.Cy

gasket material
Will work if it's like the foam rubber of the OEM
paper type, screws will fall out from vibes or you may tighten too much and crack the lens.

I decided to try my hand and painting something visible. I have never been good at finishes, so I generally avoid painting stuff, especially if you can see it. I decided to paint the float bowls on my MNS, since the black paint was peeling off, and getting worse every time I touched them.
I bought a can of aircraft stripper, self-etching primer, and satin black caliper paint. The old paint came off with a little effort, then I cleaned and primed the bowls. About an hour later, I painted them (3 coats over 20 minutes or so). The can said to cure the paint by baking it in an oven at 200°f for an hour. So, after the paint was dry to the touch, I loaded them in the oven and waited. 45 minutes later, I checked on them, only to find the paint had bubbled! I guess I didn't wait long enough... So, at 11pm, I went back out to the garage and stripped the bubbled paint off, cleaned and re-primered the bowls. I painted them today at lunch, and will probably forego the baking, and just rely on the 7-day curing process instead.
BTW, one can of paint is enough to JUST do 4 bowls twice...1980 XS850SG - Sold
