I use an icee straw. Actually, I MAKE an icee straw by cutting open the end of a bendy straw and spreading it open. It makes a teeny tiny funnel. I also only pierce the foil cover on the brake fluid bottle with two little holes to make it possible to pour into the tiny funnel.1980 XS850SG - Sold

I sold it for $100!
No, no, not Monster. That other little bike that hasn't run since October when the piston mysteriously froze (ok, not so mysteriously, but all the same, it froze). Some kids came to the door and asked if I would sell it to their dad. I had been contemplating putting it on craigslist at 75 or 100 obo, so I told it didn't as is and I'd take 100. 20 minutes later I had to go find the title and keys . Now, what to do with the $100 to make Monster ride better....1978 Yamaha XS 1100E "Monster" 2010-2012

Changed the
middle and final drive oil. I bought the bike over a year ago with 12k miles. It now has 17K and I had never checked it. And the bike had sat for 5 years before i got it.
The stuff i pulled out was dark and gray, the stuff i put in was nice and yellow.1979 XS1100SF (4-1 Kerker, XS Pods, 145 mains, 45 pilots, drag bars, blacked out)

Today I repaired the side cover lock on my hop up bike. It was not working properly and I nearly had to break the cover off to gain access to my battery.... which proved to be DEAD. It's 4 years old so I guess that's as much as I could expect from it.
Anyway I found the very tip of the original owners side cover floating around inside the lock so it would not fully release the side cover tab on my side cover. After removing it and lubing the lock it works fine. The battery is a different story. It is in deed DEAD and non chargeable so a replacement is needed before I move forward with tunning this bikes engine. Bummer, a battery will cost between 80 and 100 bucks. I also noticed that the battery ground strap is very weak at the frames mount point and it broke off with very little bending. I guess I will braze it back together cause I don't have a spare ground strap on hand.
On a different note I took my restored 79 bike for a run the other day and all is good with her :-)

Wonder what color
I finally finished the prep of the parts I need to paint. They are off a 78E, a 79SF and a 81LH. I am going to paint them all the same color, so I hope I am happy with whatever I choose. Leaning towards Black Cherry right now. Every piece was taken down to bare metal or raw plastic so no old paint to worry about. Yeah there is some bondo in each tank, although not much, and two of the side covers were repaired. They are spares for my 78E so they will be fine. Here is a couple of pics...

Fixed a fuel leak, synched the carbs, set idle mixtures, and took the 78E for a few short test runs.
It feels like it's running out of fuel. it will pull to redline, but it bucks along the way. It's particularily bad below 3000rpm, but can feel it surging throughout the range.
Oh and jury-rigged teh headlight to come on with the key. Just temporary, but I can't figure out why it's not working normally.
Don't the 78's have an on/off switch for the headlight?Last edited by Crazcnuk; 05-09-2010, 07:12 PM.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...
