              • is it better to exchange money before or right at the border? fran got her passport yesterday.

                • You can change at the border or at your local bank. However your local banks don't seem to stock Canadian very often. You can check at your bank if they don't have any you can stop at the border.
I know some canadians when in the states just use the bank machine to get american money. Not sure if it will work this way. Some places will take american money and maybe give you a exchange rate. Some won't.

                  • Hello

I am hoping to talk a few into one of the days just for the ride. It would help if I had an idea of the routes. Can the routes be posted.

Also, Heather has decided not to go, so I can share the room

                      Hi Bud,
Banks usually offer a slightly better exchange rate and lower service fee than the booth at the border crossing. However the crossing booth is convenient. expect $3 to$5 service fee at the border.
                      Good to hear passport arrived.

The closer to the border the better chance the Canadian stores will take US dollars, although we were fairly far north past few years and mostly got away with using US dollars. The cash registers at most of the name/chain stores are programmed to take US dollars and automatically calculate the exchange rate. As Phil says, those money changers close to the border are going to take their cut, so wait to change your money. Mostly the credit card works at convenience stores and gas stations and you don't have to worry about the exchange rate, the CC companies take care of that for you when you are billed. Also their ATM's work just like ours....

Trick is to not have any Canadian lucre left when you get back across the border, as it suddenly becomes 'funny money' here and no one will take it except banks and they usually also take their cut.

                          See you there!

I would like to know the route also . Why hasn't anyone answered Ted's question. Are we just going on a "JOY" ride using deer and moose as pylons.

Phil will give up his bed Ted if there isn't another available.
