I believe that's what I use on mine. Picked it up at a swap meet for a couple of bucks a few years ago. Keep in mind the flat spot on the kick shaft does not line up with the bolt on the kick start clamp. You can grind a little slot to allow the bolt to pass through.

Finally got that picture but it's not great. You can see the clip and it's distinct shape. Very rare part. To the left you can see the bracket with threaded hole (M6) that is only on 78 & 79 frames for the butterfly screw that holds the emergency kicker.

I see that is different than the clips I have pictured. It's odd that I found a couple of them in the box with the kicker bracket and wing nut. I'm going to look up under my 79 and see if it still has that clip on. If so, I think I'll mount my kicker up under there, just because I have one. Not that I'll ever use it. Let me ask this? The kick start is for emergency use. I'm assuming for when the battery dies? But then on the XS11's you need X amount of battery to create spark? So if the battery dies, the kick start won't work anyhow. Am I right about that? or am I missing something here?

If the battery is weak, it will not turn over the engine AND supply the voltage needed for spark. Kick starting turns the engine over, so the battery CAN supply the 10.5V needed for spark.

Here it is folks, the rarest (arguably) part on an XS11. No picture diagram and no part number. It has an M6 screw and is fastened to a frame bracket just under the battery box rubber donut. Very distinctive look. Sort of squared off with a flipped up lip and a hole drilled in it. The second picture is from the other side where you can see the M6 JIS screw threads protruding through the bracket. A Yamaha unicorn.

So, anyone who is planning on modifying their 1980+ motor to have kickstart capability can do so. However, the frame of the later bikes has no drilled M6 threaded tabs that will accept the elusive clip & wingnut/holder for the fixed emergency kicker from a 78/79. If you run an XS850 type "folding" conventional kicker that is mounted all the time this would not be an issue. You must relieve the kick shaft splines underneath as I pointed out in order to install the pinch bolt or the 850 kicker will fall off.

Yes it will, it has nothing to do with the starter clutch. It cranks the engine thru the transmission countershaft.

Being in the south you might want to consider going to 20W50 for the summer. I'm a Rotella guy too but when the temps head upward I make the switch and my bike runs one heck of a lot quieter.
