I'd buy another tensioner gasket and try again.

Make sure the mounting bolts aren't hanging up on the side walls of the tensioner.

I had a leak like yours, and I had to file the mounting holes of the Vmax tensioner to get the bolts to sit properly and stop leaking.

As Mike stated, it sometimes requires a little filing on the right hand side of the holes to keep the tensioner from distorting upon tightening.

That's the wrong gasket. I re-used mine after filing like y'all said. We'll see...

Picked one up at Martins in Ocala about 4-5 weeks ago, they had it in stock. Apparently there's a superceded part number that doesn't show up on the parts fische except at dealerships.

I got that one at Martins in Ocala day before yesterday. It doesn't quite fit any which way.

Seeing that mine still has an ever so slight leak I'm going to try filing those holes like DEEBS etc al have suggested. The gasket Martins sold me fit just fine and there didn't seem to be any interference getting the bolts in but a wise man knows what he doesn't know.

The original 1978 part number was 2H7-12213-10-00.

There is oil leaking here from the tension gasket, base gasket, or both.

I would spray that whole area with brake cleaner and wipe until clean.

The 40+ year old gaskets are finally taking their toll. I've learned to live with the leaks until the time comes to redo or replace the whole engine. The bike just runs so good it's a shame to take it all apart for just that.

Yea. I gotta live with some leaks.

I need to know if the tensioner gasket needs work or if it's what I can't fix- base gasket.

And oil could run down under the right side cover from the front and make the seal leak seem worse.

I will break clean and foot spray...

Speedlimit85, You seem to have a few leaks in different areas of your motor. Make sure your breather is not blocked somehow. Might have excessive crankcase pressure. Could be leaky compression rings. How many miles on that motor? A leakdown test could determine if you have a ring problem.
