Here's the plugs L to R after a hard run of about 8 miles with the smaller jets.

#1 is rich........others look spot-on. I attribute thaat to a high fuel level in #1.

    • If you look closer Brant you'll see that both 1 and 2 are a bit rich. Both on the same muffler on that Mac exhaust. Not completely sure the restricted exhaust is the issue but removing the mufflers today I got the best results so far.

Once upon a time, a car that I was working on had an exhaust restriction in the Y pipe connecting both banks of a V8. This pipe was made of double wall construction. The inner pipe had collapsed causing the restriction and, of course, was not visible. Best guesses then were that this could occur when running through a puddle of water. Replacement of the Y pipe completely cured the engine's poor running condition. I suppose it is possible for it to happen on the XS11???

          • Yes, on the stock exhaust. But, I believe the Mac exhaust is single-wall construction.

            • Ok y'all. Here's the answer.

I took the turnouts off and put on my obnoxious homemade mufflers this morning, pulled the carbs and put the 140 mains back in and took a test ride. It's running more perfectly than it ever has. Even the little stutter at WOT in low gear that's been there since I put this 2H7 engine in there. Smooth power through all RPM's.

The new Mac turnouts I've got on there are so restrictive it it was backing up the engine. Last thing I would have guessed. Thanks to one of the guys I work with that's been watching me work on this thing endlessly that said the ONLY thing I haven't tried is pulling the mufflers to see if one or both were restricted. I'd tried everything else.

Obviously they were restrictive new right out of the box and over the last 2 - 3 years of riding have sooted up inside the baffle becoming more and more restricted until this finally happened.

Anyone else having similar issues to what I've described here, particularly those with aftermarket exhaust, remove the mufflers and see if it clears up.

My buddy XJOK2PLAY called last night and said he has an old exhaust from his formerly owned XJ. Said the head pipes are kinda ugly but the mufflers are in good shape. I've got Maximan's old exhaust off of his long gone XJ, Zilla, that has aftermarket muffs and a welded spot on one collector but the chrome is good. I think between the 2 I should be able put a pretty good XJ system together.

                    • Don't ask me why, but there's a difference big time between a special exhaust and the XJ. I've had two different special exhausts on my XJ and both of them choked my XJ engine to death. I had to drill out the back end of the mufflers with a few 1/2" holes so it could breathe. An XJ system.. no problems.

Same engines, same CCs, I thought same headers, but as the old song used to go... One of these things is not like the other...

Still may have to play with the jetting some, but glad you got it worked out.

                          • Glad you are on the right track Greg me I fixed mine today dumped all the gas in my truck and a gas can of fresh E0 and after a bit no more shutter and it idles smooth again. Even though yours was not gas look out guys incase you get a dose of the crap I got.

You know I think someone said exhaust a while back ...... Maybe they need a little credit.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.
