Good Plug Color
I don't know Mike but nothing I've tried, and I've tried a LOT of different things, has made a significant difference.
The leaner I go the better it gets. I'm as lean as I can go without buying more jets.
I pulled one just to check. This is with Mac 4 into 2 and pods with 42.5 pilots, 137.5 mains, needle on center groove. All stock jetting.

Plug
I am looking at the center and side electrode basing the color/read off of that. Agreed, there is some black around the threads. Rich to me is ALL black. It looks like it is trying to run right from what I see. What mileage are you getting with the current carb setting?
If that is rich with the lean (OEM) carb settings, not much left other than fuel?Last edited by MPittma100; 09-22-2015, 11:11 AM.1981 XS1100H Venturer

Just comparing the plug to the spark plug condition matrix in the manual, it most closely resembles a carbon fouled plug. Here's what the service manual says:
- Identified by black, dry fluffy carbon deposits on insulator tips, exposed shell surfaces and electrodes.
- Caused by too cold a plug, weak ignition, dirty air cleaner, too rich a fuel mixture, or excessive idling. Can be cleaned.
But the funny thing is, the electrodes themselves look pretty good - looks lean in the center and rich on the outside. I'd clean them off good with a wire brush making sure to get between the insulator and threaded part. If you get enough guck down in there sometimes it will short a plug out. Blow 'em off good so's you don't get any loose carbon in the cylinder and see if it makes a difference. JATI think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Don't know the mileage, that's just 1 trip to and from work on the highway. About 35 miles.
It still has a bad stutter at about 4K at WOT in low gear and gurgles at full throttle in high gear on the highway. It's still rich because it gets better if I take the filters off.Greg

When is the last time you cleaned the filters? Some people run their pods oiled, but I always run mine dry for freer air flow. And I'm not even going to ask if they've got a lip - I'm sure they don't.I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Hey Greg, just a quick question that occurred to me. I agree with your thinking when you were trying to figure out what changed originally to cause the problems you now have.
Did you say a few pages back that your performance changed really when you changed to pods from the stock airbox? After that you started changing jets and chasing electrical gremlins. Not trying to reignite the pods vs stock airbox fight here (i have pods and have had no problem with them myself) but, with your aftermarket exhaust who knows. One thing you haven't tried that you could would be put the stock airbox back on and see what happens.Harry

I pulled a set of 127.5 jets out of an oddball set of Mikuni carbs I have in the pile-o-parts. I have no idea what they are off of but they have the same style jets. I'll install those and see how it is and if it's too lean I'll start drilling these until I get where I need to be and buy a set that drill size.
My friend Ken here in Tulsa (can't remember his site name) is having a very similar problem with his 80G. I'm starting to think it's a gas supply issue. As in gas station supply.Last edited by BA80; 09-22-2015, 06:12 PM.Greg

No Harry, it started before the pods. I switched to the pods because I've been pulling the carbs so much trying to cure the issue and they are easier to deal with.

I've checked and cleaned the primary AND secondary ignition to the point there's nothing to check anymore and nothing had changed. I started leaning out the fuel out and it started getting better.
I fail to see what's so confusing other than why the engine is asking for LESS fuel. A wrinkle in the time space continuum?Greg
