      • Me too (sort of)

It took me 6 months to figure out the same thing in my Stihl leaf blower. The spark arrester in the muffler plugged up. I didn't even think about the exhaust at first, but that's what made it run so crappy.

With all your XS11 experience, it's odd this problem was so hard to find. We all learned from it.

        Congratulations on solving it!

To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

Okay, I'll dive back in. The exhaust does sound vaguely familiar with regards to it getting clogged? I can't recall if you have worked on the mufflers and the baffles? My MAC 4-1's baffle is a simple louvered pipe design, so not much chance of it getting clogged. But if your baffles were Steel Wool or such, then years of carbon could build up in the mesh to cause a restriction??

I remember having a Ford T-bird with a 4 cylinder turbo, it was quite peppy. But then it became boggy, wouldn't take much throttle, etc.. Turned out that the innards of the Cat. convertor had broken up, got all turned sideways and such, so not smooth pathway thru the honeycomb structure, and essentially shut down the outflow. Once the Cat. Conv. was replaced, the engine came back to life.

OK, YC is the winner. I had dismissed his comment about the exhaust because the baffle isn't removable on the turnouts and they are relatively new. However, I do recall seeing several other bikes with this same system and there's always an area in the center that the chrome is discolored by heat and I never actually made the connection. That's where the baffle is restricted.

I've been thinking that if a person could bore a hole straight through to the other end of the baffle assembly and insert a perforated baffle, tack weld it at both ends it would relieve the restriction. JAT

The pipe the baffle is made of is about 1 3/8" ID. Here is what it looks like from the inlet.......

            • It looks like the existing baffle is just tacked in. I wonder if you ground off the weld if you could pull the old baffle out and just replace it with a different baffle. Or clean the old one and maybe modify it a bit and put it back? JAT

              • Except for the fact that the outlet is curved and the inlet has been reduced from 3" to 2 1/4" that would work.

The only options are doing it as I was thinking or cutting the thing in half.

                • I wonder how much trouble it would be to put bonafide baffles in those little mufflers you made up. Those actually look kinda cool. J&P Cycles sells a whole bunch of different baffle inserts.

                  • There are some perforated baffles in there but there was only enough room between the inner walls of the tips and the baffle for about 1/4" of SS wool. They sound kinda cool but would be obnoxiously loud for anyone riding beside or behind me.

I wonder if fiberglass matting would work any better than the steel wool. JAT

Do they do motorcycle exhausts? I wonder if they could build you something that swept up a bit to get 'em closer to the footpeg bracket like the stockers.
