Did this ever get running smoothly?

If you really did set the floats from the top of the gasket and not from the carburetor body gasket surface then the floats are wrong.

The floats are too high by the thickness of one gasket when the carburetors are upside down and that makes them too low in the float bowls and too lean when the engine is running.

Take off the gaskets and reset the floats. I know, that's easy for me to say.

As an aside, I always check the sync at 4K RPM once the idle is correct, just to make sure the carbs stay working together.
Front brake, when parked for the night, use a bungie to put on the front brake for the night. It will help the air to float to the "top".

Plugs as follow:
#1 Dry and sooty
#2, #4 between just normal to almost wet
#3 Nice, slight brown
Not run sense Tuesday

I set All floats from top of gasket to top of each side of float to 25.7mm or 1inch will recheck.

Will Try the front brake trick, little SOB.

OK, back to the business end of this build.... took 6-7 rides around the block adjusting the air/ fuel mixture screws not much luck....
1.butterflies all synced with motion pro style sync tool
2.got a great smooth idle
3.Breaks up at roughly 4000 rpms no matter air /fuel settings
2.00,2.25,2.50,2.75,3.00 turns out from lite seat
4. tach seems fine (acurate) while not moving but wants to jump from 2000 to five and 3000 to 6000 rpms while going down the road
5. Light backfire trough carbs and tail pipe
6. I could see backfire in clear sycn tube on #1 vacuum fitting seemed to go away when all butterflies got synced
7. Nice acceleration from 2000 to 3500 then flat

For the life of me I don't remember and no pics show it but don't know if I removed and cleaned the Venturi tube (needle jets)

Looks like I get to dive back into carbs anything else I should look for while in the carbs?

Also the front @%^&*(##@$%^@#%@$@%bitchen brakes still have air in them. My nemesis

Also torqued the head bolts, oil pan, ACCT, and valve cover bolts all needed attention after getting it hot. Didn't really expect that.

Retro! U smart that's the term I was looking for....Black gators I have, put them on and off, on and off they upset the balance in my opinion. Now if I could get just the chrome coil springs like the rear shocks that maybe the bomb.

What if we gave it a new category (style) then I could keep the Mirrors LOL

Lose the mirrors (bobbers don't have em), get some black fork gaiters to cover up them skinny legs and lower headlight a few inches (street fighter). But that's just how I would finish it off. Square gauges are retro which I think is cool. Like paint choice.

I have to admit my skeptiscism initially but I wholeheartedly agree with Marco...you have achieved what few actually set out to accomplish. I am a purist at heart however I must say I wouldnt mind owning and riding this one...IMO keep the gauges and mirrors...I dont think they detract from the look....my hats off to you

That means a lot coming from your respected crowd. i must admit i have a purist streak but an even wider perfectionist streak the combination always turned it into a endless train wreck.....No amount of work, pristine original parts, amount of shine was ever good enough to be seen in public....

So prier to this adventure a wise bird (paid professional) suggested I incorporate levels of fit and finish into my project (therefor planed) imperfection at different levels in order to keep moving forward. So I picked a few items that had to be perfect #1 balance #2 non stock #3 paint #4-20 I picked different levels of finish.....I must admit I had a blast and the advise kept me moving forward...

Thanks for the kind words everyone.......I'm feeling if I lose the mirrors and square gauges i'm going to lose the bikes identity of being born in the 70's....But will have to admit I would be giving the same advise to the next person when looking at the bike.....I just love the damn things, what can I say

An XS11 bobber/streetfighter bike is not really my "cup of tea", either.

IMO, achieving a balanced look is such a difficult proposition when attempting one of these builds.

But ... you know what? You have managed to pull it off ... it does look balanced ... KUDOS!

I can appreciate all the blood, sweat, and tears that have gone into your project ... and ... where you have brought the bike thus far ... well, it looks GOOD!

Oh, and FWIW, I'm kinda diggin' the "clunky" gauges and mirrors.

It differentiates your build from all the other bobbers out there that have a single tiny gauge and tiny bar-end mirrors.
