      Stffu ahppens.

I used to be more optimistic and believed that at least it happened to me this time and some other guy was getting a break but the universe doesn't work that way. I have determined that it not only happened to me and the other guy, it probably also happened to at least another half dozen or more people at random.

It sort of important that you get Mikuni jets so we can keep a common reference for tuning:

Mikunis are based on the amount of fuel they'll flow.

Some aftermarket companies size them by the diameter of the hole.
Some I haven't really figured out but at least they're consistent.
Some stamp numbers on them but size and flow varies according to the whims of Charley the Third Shift Wonder Chimp.

          • The jets I bought SAY they are mikuni, but we will see when they get here!

No bike isn't running yet, waiting for parts.

            • Hi, I have a 80 XS11 standard, am running pods and shorty, minimal baffle mufflers. I went through the same growing pains as you. I tried getting the jetting right on my own, got it somewhat close then decided to splurge on a kit from Dynojet, which also includes new needles. The kit worked great for me, bikes running like a champ. Link below.

In your original post you mentioned that the bike would idle fine and while sitting you could rev it up just fine, but when riding it it would bog down and would go until you reved it up more. I had this exact same problem and it ended up being a common issue which is the ignition advance wiring. The wires are flexible, however over time and I'm assuming due to heat as well the conductor inside the wiring will break down and cause a issue as you described. There is a tutorial on the tech tips for this. Give it a shot, might fix your issues.

              • Thanks for the info! I've been looking at dynojet kits, and I'd these last jets I ordered don't do the trick, I might just get some! About the ignition advance, I don't think my 82 has that, an I wrong?

                • Random off topic question for everyone, just went and bought a non running bike for my buddy I got it running but it seems to lag when you give it throttle. Like you give it throttle, them back off....THEN it revs then slows down. I feel like that is a common sign of something... but I can't remember what...

I see the dynojet kit comes with main AIR jets as well?
Should I be considering changing those?
                    I haven't see this mentioned.

Also. If I do decide to get the dynojet kit after-all when/if the jets I have coming DON'T work..

                    On their website it says
                    "
                    Stage 1&3
                    STAGE 1

                    K&N filter #YA-1400
                    STAGE 3
For mildly tuned machines using individual filters or velocity
                    stacks. K&N filters #RC-0984
Both stages may be used with a good aftermarket slip-on
                    "

I'm concerned that even with the stage 3, it wont remedy pods and open headers.

Can you show me some pics of your setup?

Thanks for the info by the way!

Here is my bike. Individual pods, with shorty mufflers. I don't know how many times you've cleaned those carbs, but clean them one more time, then do it again. It took me quite a bit of effort and tears to get this bike running right. It is very rewarding, keep at it. When are we going to see some photos of yours?

                      • You have some back pressure with that exhaust, Dylano is talking open header. I too recommended the Dynojet kit, but with some back pressure in the exhaust system.

                        • Just to add one more thing to check AFTER you get it running is..... Leaking throttle shaft seals. If these seals leak the carb sucks air between the shaft and the body of the carb causing an even more lean mix. I only mention it because I HAD that problem. A little spray of carb cleaner on the shaft ends will tell you right away if they are leaking. Just My .02

I'll be back with hopefully great news tomorrow! Maybe then I'll have a pic for you guys. The bike is just roughly thrown together right now, after it runs good I'll make individual pieces a day project to remove, clean, paint, and install again. Eventually it will be great!
