Yeah I saw a couple deals similar to that.
That a good idea... of course, leave it to the few to spoil it for the many! (:

Us oldies' here can guess with farly good accuracy what's gonna happen, and in what order it's gonna take place if NOT following those sound suggestions.
But I would be doing in the order suggested wouldn't I?

I'll do the order suggested, just sync and rejet BEFORE as well...
I don't see what harm that could do.

I will sync and rejet to get it actually running somewhat decently(hopefully) then follow the suggested steps

Nothin' wring with that in my book!

          • Go for it!

Nope, there's nothing wrong with the way you want to do in my book either!

Bear in mind that all this stuff can be and usually is cumulative. You may wind up doing several carb syncs; pulling the carbs to clean them; play with the fuel levels and re-jetting several times to work around tight valve clearances and a wonky ignition and/or electrical problem.

Finally! It's sync'd up and running! You've got a set of monscuceous main jets in that bad boy that'd do a Chrysler 440 Hemi proud so you jump on and ride out to see just exactly what it'll do. Holy Moly! Aside from a few pops and snorts in the low and midrange it hits 5K RPM and pulls like a freight train right up to and over the ton before you know it!

            How are the brakes?

            • The advise I usually give anyone that's going to try to build a custom bike is, get it running good with the stock components FIRST. It will run good with the carbs set up stock no matter what you do to it if the carbs and ignition are right.

Then you can take little steps one at a time to try to improve on it.

Greg, I think he's going to take the high, winding, twisty route just for the fun and the leaning <sic> experience: Kinesthesia -- he'll do alright.

Scott, as I remember, the XJ had linked brakes, so he will be able to push on the pedal, try the hand lever, and come to a stop.......eventually. Then, when he tries to start on the next great road, the rotors will be smoking HOT! We've been there, done that.
As long as he STARTS with a valve adjustment, the rest should go well.
Dylano*, I do have a few shims, so I may be able to send down the correct size once you know what you need.

I've got some spare shims too; gleeped one from the wrecked XJ11 head that's sitting in the corner and fixed the tight exhaust valve that showed up this time around in the valve check.

I would normally agree with that...
BUT I bought this bike in a pile of parts, well a few piles actually.
Most of it was there, but rather than build it stock first,
I decided to just build it how I want it to begin with.
Even if it is harder to get running,
I was hoping that this way it would be running and built the way I want it, sooner.

That was the goal anyways! (:

                        Ahhhh yes the breaks,
The fronts weren't all there to begin with,
so I got an after market lever and reservoir.
                        I got good pressure,
but I have to squeeze the hell out of it with minuscule results!
The rear breaks... they are kinda locked up,
                        basically on all the time,
BUT I can make them MORE on by pressing the lever!
I end up stopping, just slowly... haha
Luckily this thing has so much damn torque, that downshifting works wonders!

I'd make it worth your while.
This weekend, I will re-measure all the valve clearances,
and maybe make a tool to check my shims.

Get your shims figured out and take the ones you don't need to a dealer service department in your area, along with a six-pack of Coca-Cola. Tell them you are new to the dealership, and wanted to say hello while handing over the soda. Then ask them if they can help you with some shims you want to swap. Ask me how I know.
