BTW nice work !
I can't road test the bike until the bike is finished and the weather improves...no way am I taking the bike out in the rain and salt!

So, hopefully a more interesting progress report a week on Monday!

Hi Done,
Although the UK does not get the extreme cold like we do they do have below freezing temperatures at times. Their roads in certain places develop a condition known as " Black Ice" where a thin layer of water freezes on the surface of the road but is invisible to approaching drivers.
Salt is used to prevent this.

• We get black ice all the time here in S.E. Wisconsin, U.S. so I know what that is. I did not know you had to deal or not deal with it too ?
I remember walking the dog with wifie, stopped to see what the dog was sniffing and the next thing I knew was the wifie asking if I was OK. Told her just leave me for a bit to see. Head connecting with road, feet in the air, good thing it was cold had thick stocking cap, hooded sweatshirt, hooded winter jacket. Hardest thing was trying to get up again, had to worm my way over to the grass to get traction to stand up.

We get snow and ice and frost here as well as the fogs immortalised in Sherlock Holmes stories. When the temperature drops, salt is spread on our roads by 'gritters'...trucks with a large hopper of salt which is spread by a device at the back of the truck. The salt lowers the freezing temperature of water and helps stop the roads from freezing over. Unfortunately, the salt remains until there's a heavy rain and cars and bikes get covered in a fine white dust. This attacks the alloy and ferrous parts and makes it corrode very, very quickly. You can take a bike out and come back a few hours later to find the frame rusting in areas where the paint may have been chipped, and all the alloy corroding. It actually burns into fork sliders especially. Horrible stuff!

Having said that, and having chopped 6 tons of firewood and bought 1.5 tons of coal in preparation for a predicted bad winter, it was actually 15 degrees C yesterday and I went out for a nice run on the XJR1300. Totally amazing and exceptional for January.

Four or five years ago, we actually had temperatures of minus 16 degrees and load of snow. Small as the UK is, there's quite a variety of weather and Scotland regularly gets snow. So it's not only fog and rain here!

Having grown up in Western New York, I noted immediately that those boys don't have proper snow boots. I spent all of my winters doing what they're doing. Thanks for posting those!

If it were like that every year, we'd invest in snow boots, pronto! That year, it caught everyone unawares...the UK stopped for a few weeks!

Excellent Igloo and snow fort. No glove either
Your first picture is what my street looks like outside today. I am tucked in here with the furnace consuming some Alberta natural gas...at an alarming rate.

Gloves in pic 3 but they soon got soaked and freezing.

We used a plastic box to make the snow bricks......... Perfect for it!

My two stoves run on wood, so not too alarming, as I get it free.

• Document holder decal

I'm wondering if someone could help out by emailing me with a close-up photo of the decal on the plastic document wallet located inside the left side panel of the XS? It's quite big and shows the battery breather pipe routing, I think. I'm looking to get one made here by a decal place but they don't have an original to copy.

Unless someone actually has a decal available??

• Ps. Also, it would be good to know the size of the decal so they can duplicate it.....

I'm picking the tank etc up from the spray shop on Saturday and will get the bike back together at the weekend, hopefully. So this 'potential project' has taken 11 months. Longer than the last one which took 4 months but I've been a bit more chilled out on this one!

I'm now looking for another XS1100 project....... Heaven help me, why do we do it?

• Looking at a listing on eBay, I think it's actually three decals on the document wallet. One of them is showing how to use the wre and lever from the tool kit when removing the rear wheel. The other is the breather pipe for the battery and there's a small oblong one with some sort of caution on it.

If anyone has any pix of any of the above in close up, I'd appreciate a PM....

Thanks
