Rear wheel bearing LEFT side

    The two bearings arrived yesterday, the day after Memorial Day, so this time it took nine days to get the parts from the U.K.

    The bearings are carefully packed so both are in excellent shape and one of them is now living the life of Charles Nelson "Needles" Reilly in its new home in the rear wheel hub.

      You're welcome, Scott! Nine days is pretty good considering the distance, eh? I bet your wheel will feel different too, with a new replacement.......

        I made a 60 mile round trip to Krispy Kreme donuts in beautiful downtown Burbank, Ca. The donuts were fresh out of the tub when I walked in the door and still hot so mine was just slightly krispy, light and fluffy instead of heavy and greasy -- perfect!

        Oh, yes, and Columbo hasn't ridden so smoothly since I put new bearings in... heck, it's over 70,000 miles and four years ago. Time flies and so does my XS11!

          Have you done 70,000 miles in 4 years?? I'm looking for a 'respekt' emoticon.... Mind you, you're in sunny CA..not like rainy England (it's been raining here for days on end)

          I don't need to tell you this but pack those bearings with a good quality grease! And keep off the jet washer...

            Sunny Caly didn't digest all those miles as he's been 3/4's the way cross the country......and back, more than once, with part of it being a Canadian diversion.................and he's gettin dialed in to do it again. IIRC, last sumer/falls meandering around NorthAmerica alone he tacked on some 7,300mi!.......not countin' that scoot is his primary everyday wheels.

              Thanks, James, I had to change the wheel bearings shortly after I bought the bike but I don't remember how many miles I put on them before I had to 'refresh' the engine. I've put over 76,000 miles on it since then even though I did everything you're not supposed to do to an engine and expect more than a few thousand miles out of it at the most but it just keeps going. I do enjoy complaining and moaning about Columbo but the engine has been utterly reliable.

              I don't need to tell you this but pack those bearings with a good quality grease! And keep off the jet washer...
              You are not kidding!

              When I bought the bike it had water in everything, I just didn't know it at the time. The P.O. used a pressure washer to clean it up before storing it in the garage for the better part of a decade under a plastic tarp and not far from the clothes dryer.

              There's a snorkel on the air box so obviously it's a submarine --- ALA-A-R-RM!

                Yeah but I have to stop, I just can't do that stuff any more.

                Sooner or later (probably sooner) I'm going to have to read up on all of Fred's threads and put on a sidecar, something I am loathe to do because there's no point in riding a bike that can't lane share in California so I'd be better off just getting another engine for the cage.

                  ........unless the State of Caly pays you more than it's worth fixin', to keep it off the road. IIRC, that was the better option previously.

                    That was a different one; put 3/4-million miles on it and the State of California had to pay me to get rid of it. Not bad at all.

                      How does it work that the state pays you to get rid of a bike then?

                          California doesn't test motorcycles, yet, but that's not a bad plan!

                          It was my old trusty '86 Camry and the State-sponsored program is to get rid of "gross polluter" vehicles when they fail a smog test. You take it to a designated scrap yard along with the paperwork to get paid and the vehicle is scrapped so it and none of its parts will ever touch the sacred highways of the State of California again in any way, shape or form except possibly as part of a new vehicle.

                            Do they pay a reasonable amount then? Here in the Uk, they tried a scrappage scheme of approx $3,000 per car but only on a trade in on a new vehicle. Of course, that still means paying out quite a lot of money on a new car though....

                              • my bike is somewhere in the 16,000 mile range and I am getting new tires and was wondering if I should take out the bearings and repack them when I take the rim off to put the tire on? Are they easy to get out? James, do you still have 2 left? Should I worry about getting one and save for later, if I don't lose it? Thanks.
