You can swell some rubber like parts with fuel or acetone, once swelled would they stay that way ? Does the heat of the engine keep them from shrinking, would it keep the ones that were swelled with acetone from shrinking back ?
The Viton cord ought to solve it. The originals shrank so much they were totally useless. I've spandex parts before using another chemical but they always shrink back again. Hopefully the Viton will do the trick.

The local hard ware did not have O-rings to fit the valve covers on an XS650 I was working on 17 years ago. The owner saw what I was asking for and got out some spools of this stuff, he asked if he could cut the stock O-ring I had, measured and cut a length off the spool super glued it together. I never used it but could in a pinch.

looks to be a good DIY replacement. Wouldn't want those fins flappin' in the breeze. Still missin' one lower.....for whatever reason, the bottom two fins didn't have them, least my Venturer never did.

              James,

Your photo shows the correct number of "Viton chunks" on the left side (12), but it appears you mounted them starting one row "too high".

Simply remove the 2 on the top "row", and mount them in the "row" directly under the bottom "row" you currently have chunks in, and it will be as it came from the factory ... hope that makes sense!

Can't see the right side of your engine, but you can use this photo to make sure they are mounted in the correct positions on the right side ... P.S. Supersize the photo!

                Different thickness?

P.S.S. The "new bottom row" chunks you install (on engine's left side) may have to be a slightly different thickness than the chunks you have in your current "top row" ...

You may have to cut new ones ...

Thanks Marco. I'll do just that. The ones on the right side are correct and less easy to get wrong because of the cam plug things. Gotta get things right, eh?

I don't like the stainless head nuts I just put on. Too pointy. I'm going to try grinding the points off. Or I'll clean up the OEM ones and get them chromed or zinc plated......

Funny you mentioned those head nuts ... I was wondering why you chose that style ...

They were on eBay as for the xs1100. The washers were so huge they wouldn't fit and the nuts had points. I'll be putting the OEM ones back on!

Yeah, the OCD world. We're all on the spectrum somewhere, I reckon
