    Oil pressure

depends on the spring and check ball at the pump. The '79 I had would pump 50 lbs when cold, the '78 does 40 and the engine from the '79 special only does 30. It's the pressure required to push the ball against the spring and bypass back to the sump. I can be raised with washers under the spring. Of sourse it takes very little pressure to float a bearing.

        A sealed unit

So other then the oil filter housing and head oil supply pipe, which on this engine goes to an oil cooler, this engine is complete and ready to pop into the frame which will be started later today or on the weekend. More photos of this engine. The last 2 are from above the way the engine would be seen in the bike.

            Rob,

            That's slick!!!!

I like the filter for the case vent!

The oil gauge looks awesome, like chop said...factory!

            Couple questions though...

I'm thinking that's a 78/79 motor but the kirkstart hole is covered like on a 80/81. Is it a 80/81 motor or a 78/79 motor with an 80 cover or did you remove the kirkstart and make your own cover?

What are using for filters on the carb vent hoses?

How come you are running vac lines between 1 and 2 and 3 and 4?

Hope my questions don't come across as being dopey, I'm just curious cause I ran a line from 1 to 2 when I didn't have an extra cap after losing the octi. I was concerned though that linking them could cause me problems. I'm also planning on going to pods and have been thinking of ways to filter the vent hoses while still allowing them enough flow to breath properly.

Vac lines between carb boots is to keep out bugs until the engine is mounted and the fuel tank hooked up.

This is a 1978 engine and I have removed the kick starter parts both inside and outside the cases. The "plug" that covers the hole where the kicker shaft used to be is still available from Yamaha.

Carb vent hoses will be routed to a filter up under the fuel tank. I will use a fuel filter from CTC that fits for that job. They don't really need to breath so to speak. They just need to be open to the outside. That being said I was thinking of connecting them to the outside pod filters because there must be some negative air pressure in the air box where they usually hook up. I am however thinking that too much negative air pressure like in the pods might draw fuel up the lines or cause other unknown issues.
You should be able to find new bullet caps at any auto supply shop. They are just vac nipple covers. S**t ... all my vac lines are from CTC (windshield washer hose) and I have been told it will take the heat so long as it is not in contact with hot parts.

                Thanks for the info Rob,

I'm still confused on the vents though. I was thinking of a fuel filter too but don't they also need to let a little air in to balance out the level when the fuel drops?

They simply need to be unplugged and open the the outside air. Otherwise when fuel in the bowls drops a vacuum would be created in the vents and incoming fuel would be draw up those hoses like a straw. The only real reason they normally vent into the air box is to make the bike run cleaner and meet EPA standards that don't allow raw fuel to be vented into the air. EPA wants that fuel fumes recycled into the intake system.
A fuel filter will work just fine to keep out dirt and dust.

I'm not sure chop ... This units install was easy due to the gauge being made for the 1100. I compared the bolt that came with the unit and other then the extension to receive the gauge it is the same.

                          gauge bolt

I just want the gauge to be positioned just as you have yours so I can see it while I'm sitting on the bike... I want the adapter in SS also....

You do realize, I suspect, that if you throw in a T on each side, and connect the Ts to each other, that you will in effect create a YICS system on your pre-YICS engine?
