Probably more than you want to pay.
But for me it was way easier just to fill the tank all of the way up and leave it rather than flipping the tank over and not knowing if it removed all of the rust.
But of course I had to have the one bike that holds 5 1/2 gallons of gas or close to it.
But for me I now know all of the rust is gone on everything in the tank.79 YAMAHA XS1100F

I googled it and it came up about $125 for 6 gallons. I can get a tank boiled out at a radiator shop for $60. It'll take the paint too though.Greg

I didn't mind paying the extra mainly because no paint loss even though it will be painted again eventually and also no liner.
What you save using the acid you kinda lose having to add a liner.
So it did what I wanted it to do.
Well there is a plus side I am still using it for other parts.
So it's not just use and get rid of it I can continue to use until it stops working.
Hey I'm happy with it so that's all that matters. ;-P79 YAMAHA XS1100F

Yes, you can reuse the product for a lot of other parts, depending how crappy the tank was to start with. The other good thing that when your done using it, you can dump it down the drain, or where ever since it is 100% non toxic.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Getting Ready
I am in process of removing a failed tank liner. Going to use Acetone for the removal and Evaporust for the preparation of the tank interior. Have ordered the Caswell tank lining kit for the new lining.
In process of making block off plates for the petcock openings and will use a rubber bung in the filler neck.
Looking at the prior posts, this should hopefully go well.

Tank Cleaning
What is involved with electrolysis? How exactly is it done? Also, did you install a liner in the tank afterwards? If not, what will keep it from rusting again?
I am working on one now. I used Acetone to loosen the old failed liner. The first application got the majority of the liner loose, but not all of it. I drained the first batch of Acetone and have added some new to try getting the rest of the old liner out. There is some residue that the Acetone doesn't seem to be cutting. Not sure what to do about that. The tank does have rust and I am trying to get the liner out prior to removing the rust. I was thinking of adding some abrasive stones to the Acetone this time to aid removal.

For the fuel tank I prefer to use electrolysis because it actually restores some good metal instead of just removing the rust and I believe that any over-thirty-year-old gasoline bomb needs all the help it can get before you go canyon carving with it or try to play with the big trucks.
To clean up the top of the fuel tank under the filler neck with electrolysis isn't too difficult but it is a little more complicated than a chemical soak that you can pretty much ignore while you go do something else:-

Turn The Tank Upside Down
When I clean the tank on Columbo this weekend I'm going to try electrolysis first and follow it up with Evapo-Rust and see how that turns out.Last edited by MPittma100; 12-16-2013, 09:47 PM.1981 XS1100H Venturer

This rust cutting media from Harbor Freight will get the residue out. I let my tank spin in the dryer for two hours. It did the trick for me.
If you have decided to go with Evaporust, you've probably chosen the best way to go. You can use the electrolysis method, but it's a lot more work.

Thanks for your reply. I have just ordered these stones from Harbor freight and will give them a try. Did you use any liquid with the stones in the dryer? What is the electrical source for the electrolysis? Is that Arm and Hammer baking soda solution - picture says washing soda.

Run the resin stones dry. They will not cut metal. That is their advantage.
A battery charger will run the electrolysis process. I did a tank that way and followed with Metal Rescue with the tank upside down to do the top.
Yes to Arm&Hammer washing soda.
If you can afford it, the Metal Rescue / Evaporust solution is the easiest and safest method.Marty (in Mississippi)

Make sure it is WASH soda and not BAKING soda. They are different products. Arm and Hammer does make with though.Nathan
