It works great but to really clean out a tank you need 2 gallons. I have a tank I'm cleaning right now and all the area it stays in contact with is perfectly clean. However, the hump in the middle is proving difficult to get done. I have had the stuff in there for 2 weeks and I shake it every chance I get. It is slowly getting the high spot but 2 gallons would have already had it done.

Yes, I just finished tank with Metal Rescue, similar stuff. It has to be in contact with the metal to work properly. It took two gallons for my project, a Special tank, to get it to come up over the frame tunnel. Even than I had to carefully position the tank more level than it sits normally.

Left a rear brake MC plastic reservoir in Evaporust for a week, (my Evaporust is getting tired) and it removed ALL the rust stains on it, so that it looks virtually new.
Bone stock 1980 Special except for the exhaust and crashbars. Oh yeah, and the scabbard for the Winchester Defender.
How long should it take to do a tank with fresh evaporust? I just started doing mine. Bought 2 1/2 gal to be sure I covered the tunnel. I let it stand bottom down for 24 hours and just rotated it to a side. Will 24 hrs per area do the trick?

I've never got it to work that fast. Usually takes about a week or so for me.

Here's my experience cleaning two rusted tanks with evaporust. It works great. First you can leave the petcocks in, as it will not damage the aluminum or pot metal or the rubber. It will not damage paint either. Now the important thing is that the tank must be filled to the top, or you will get a fresh rust line were the evaporust level is if you are only partially filled. This is a bit expensive. So I put in a gallon and then filled the rest with water. The manufacturer says not to dilute the solution, but I found it worked just fine, just a bit slower. Also the hotter you can make things the faster it works. So leave the tank out in the sun if possible. After a few days the inside of the tank will look like new. Then drain as much of the evaporust as possible, and immediately add 8 oz of oil and shake it around to prevent any new rust. I used 2 stroke oil. Then fill with fresh gas to the top. And that's it. The recycled evaporust can them be used to de rust other parts of the bike. For exhaust pipes, I soak paper towels in the evaporust, then wrap them around the pipes. Then add a layer of plastic cling wrap to prevent the towels from drying out, and in a few days you will have rust free pipes. Hope this helps, Leo

I have the luxury of a bunch of crap around here, so I did three methods. I did electrolysis, acid bath, and Metal Rescue. By far, the easiest and neatest method was with the Metal Rescue. Nothing is left in the tank but shiny clean metal. Electrolysis will get it done, but it takes a lot more patience. Also, how do you get the whole top of the tank with electrolysis? The acid bath leaves a hard black substance where the rust was, and this method will give you flash rust in a heartbeat after you're finished.
Metal Rescue and Evap-o-rust have only one disadvantage. $25 per gallon.
I bought a jug of Evapo-Rust and I like it! It's easier to chemically remove rust from some parts for most of the same reasons that electroless plating is easier than electroplating.
For the fuel tank I prefer to use electrolysis because it actually restores some good metal instead of just removing the rust and I believe that any over-thirty-year-old gasoline bomb needs all the help it can get before you go canyon carving with it or try to play with the big trucks.
To clean up the top of the fuel tank under the filler neck with electrolysis isn't too difficult but it is a little more complicated than a chemical soak that you can pretty much ignore while you go do something else:-
When I clean the tank on Columbo this weekend I'm going to try electrolysis first and follow it up with Evapo-Rust and see how that turns out.

Have any of you tried both Metal Rescue and Evapo-Rust? Do they perform equally? I tried Metal Rescue, and it works just as advertised. Home Depot now carries it at some locations.

I actually met the guys from Metal Rescue at the Barbers Vintage Festival. I talked to them plus a few people that had used it many times.
So I went with the Metal Rescue and bought 6 gallons and put the tank in a plastic bin big enough to hole it and if anything leaked it would catch any overflow. I wanted to be able to fill the tank up over the top and get rid of the rust where the gas cap sits. So I bought some plastic screw thread covers and sealed off the petcocks and the vent and then filled the tank up.
Now this tank was completely rust covered inside. Didn't want to take the extra time to put anything inside the tank and get stuck. So I just went for it and filled the tank up and left it for two days.
So after two days it was so black I could not see if it had finished doing it's job so I poured it out and I still had a few rustspots so I was surprised. I called the company and I found out what had happened. The second day the temperature had dropped considerably and my office is concrete and the temp inside dropped in to the 50's, So the catalyst stopped working or at least slowed.
So i told them I would strain the existing fluid through some cheese cloth and put it back in for another 24 to 36 hours. So I strained the sediment out and poured it back in with a little fresh and after about 30 hours the tank was completely clean no rust.
Temp has to be 68 degrees or warmer for the catalyst to work so I put a space heater back by the container to keep the temp up during the day and left the heat turned way up at night.
