    FZR Update - Basically Done....

    XS11 Friends,
    This bike is BASICALLY done. Stops great, runs great, handles like it's on rails, looks pretty good. Ready to ride at a moments notice.

    The bike needs a little cosmetic repair on the left side where it was downed by a PO but there's not much need for any additional update on this one..... time to start on the bike I acquired today! (see new thread FJ1200)

      XS11 Friends,

      FZR IS BLOWN UP... Rebuild finally beginning.

      Those that attend the Vintage Yamaha Rally are probably aware that I blew up the FZR last summer a couple months before the rally. The cam chain snapped and wrapped around the crank.

      I've been procrastinating the rebuild as the repair of a 21 valve machine (1 in the exhaust) was not a picnic I was looking forward to.....

      Fortunately (or unfortunately), I thought I had accumulated the necessary parts for what was sure to be a total mess and now it's time to get the ole' screamer going again.....



      I was expecting some valve damage but the CARNAGE is unreal. These valves are itsy-bitsy compared to the XS11 and extremely fragile. Obviously, at even an estimated measly 3k PRM, these valves smacking pistons when the chain snapped was going to create some havoc....



      Unfortunately, the "SPARE" head I purchased years ago wasn't too much better than mine. Actually, the only redeeming quality was it didn't have a snapped off valve guide! Almost all the valves in the "SPARE" were crap too!! On the fortunate side, I have enough good exhaust valves and enough of the center intake valves (these are different dimension than the outers). I've purchased all new outers from Part Shark at ~$25/ea. I HOPE show up quickly as the YZF1000 uses the same valves (fingers are crossed!). All the valves will be pulled out again and lapped in v-e-r-y l-i-g-h-t-l-y.



      I don't see any piston damage but I have a spare set of used OEM standard pistons and a set of jugs.....

      I thought of going LOW BUDGET but am having some second thoughts..... While I'm in here a bottle brush hone an a new set of rings will likely be the order of business. I am NOT going after the bottom end as there does not seem to be anything to indicate a problem there. Yes, this move could be considered "Half-Arse" but the availability of new bearings is the biggest concern... Bearings for this thing are like trying to find a '79 Special rear pull bar!...BUT WORSE AVAILABILITY!



      Looks like the XS850 will be waiting on the FZR to be completed before much more is done on her....UGH!

      FYI - My British EXUP forum's BB software is out-of-date and the forum function is DEAD. The cost to upgrade and the hours of labor required make it unlikely the site will return.... Sound Familiar? Lucky the XS11 guys have those couple of dedicated enthusiasts that have kept the XS11 forum up and running. THANK YOU! Forums like this are 1000000000 times better than faker-book.

        FINALLY! I received the last needed replacement valves from YAMAHA!


        All the valves are installed, lapped, and leak checked! What a PITA - 20 VALVES! (+ one in the Exhaust Pipe)



        Now, one side (either exhaust or intake) must have all the valves on that side pulled to install the cam case/carrier.


        Cam case installed, exhaust valves re-installed. Getting ready to install some shims check clearances, then adjust, then remove the cam and do the other side.


        Exhaust Side is done and adjusted to spec. However, this will require a re-check once ready to fire and then again after a good run-in.


        Using a spreadsheet to help track for future reference and to allow the MATH to be completed by the program to determine the best fitting shim.
        My XS11 Spreadsheet is like 1/5 the size and complexity.

        Lots of FUN!!!! It will run again.... MAYBE SOON!!!!

              Far too many hard to find parts missing or broken. That's a parts bike only.
              • The windscreen alone which is cracked is UN-OBTAINIUM!
                The side covers are both missing HUNDREDS EACH in crap condition
                Front Fairing Cover Missing - HUNDREDS
                Front Fender missing HUNDREDS
                Motor Replacement Complete - $1000++ Shipping+
                Mirror are some crap from another bike ($100 ea new)
                Ignition Switch is Crap - $100
                Carbs are probably Crap - $300 for complete kits
                Radiator & Fan not shown - HUNDREDS
                Where is the Exhaust w/EXUP? HUNDREDS
                Brake Lines Look OEM - HUNDREDS
                All the turnsignals are busted - HUNDRED
                MONEY PIT MONEY PIT MONEY PIT

              The guy could sell the tank for $400+ and a few other good bits and make $1000+++ easily. However, that bike will NEVER run again..... Unless someone wants to spend THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS and HOPE TO FIND A MOTOR and all the other missing parts.

                I never considered buying it because it didn't have the rare exhaust and the engine would be ridiculously hard to replace. I thought the same thing as you did.

                Sorry if I alarmed you by my remark,... and thanks for looking out for me,... but whenever I see that ad, I remember your nice project. Those are rare bikes and they are cool.

                  Got the head back on....

                  Checked all the Intakes, pulled the intake cam, make the necessary shim adjustments, decided I had enough time to install the head.

                  Now, with the head in place, I can clean-up the small garage a little bit
                  • Head Pipes and Muffler can be installed.
                  • ExUp Cables can be installed.
                  • Radiator, Fan, & Hoses can be installed.
                  • Rear head water passages and thermostat housing can go on.
                  • Oil Lines to head can go on.
                  • Some of the wiring can be placed back where it belongs
                  • Mounts from the head to the Perimeter Frame can be re-installed.
                  • All the motor mounts can be properly torqued (loosened to remove the jugs).
                  • Carbs could maybe go on....But the throttle cables have to be installed with carbs off and the cables will be in the way of the remaining top end work & alignments.
                  Getting all that crap back on the 2 wheels will make some room for other necessary work and work on the XS850.

                    Don't know if you should trust me with that beauty!

                    The XS-Triples aren't fast, but you will like the handling. They feel comfortable, nimble, and fit like a glove on the backroads. I feel completely confident on mine.
