The answer is simple. It was ( and still is ) all over the news. Record profits. They say that there is a shrotage. I kinda remember the 70's, The only shortage of oil then was to us. There's no shortage, Just bucks being made. The maket's driving the price up. Companies raise the price, Big profits are made. It's all about the buck, greedy people that have alot want and will take more. I'm going to shut up now cuz This is a bad subject for me to talk about without being in the shop drinkin a beer.
Moab, Utah on 4-15-06: $2.379 for 87 octane (Regular.) Also saw one station who has it for $2.359. In my home town of Rifle, Colorado, 87 octane Regular is $2.849 and up.
Part of it is oil prices, part of it is state tax on gasoline. Most states prohitbit the posting of how much you pay in state tax on a gallon of gas. There is also a Federal tax of 18.4 cents per gallon - cpg.
If you want to see what you pay in state tax, theck out this site:
Go figure Jerry.................comes in here and there on the same rail tanker!.........and it's higher here than Rifle or Moab!

We Californians pay on average 13 cents more in taxes per gallon than the rest of the states. If it's taxes, our gasoline would only cost 13 cents more than the rest of the country. Why are we paying way more than that? I live within 100 miles of 6 major refineries. California's got oil. We actually export gasoline. Why is California gasoline sold thousands of miles away for way less than it is sold in California?
Oh yeah, "market forces". Since Californians are, on average, more "affluent", the oil companies figure that we can pay more. In some of the poorer rural counties, gas costs less even though it is shipped farther from the refinery. Oh right, Mr. Oil Company spokesman, they're giving the poor a break because the oil companies are so altruistic.
Guess that tells you how I feel.

GAS WAR - an idea that WILL work (How to reduce gasoline prices!)
This was originally sent by a retired Coca Cola executive It came from one of his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. It's worth your consideration.
Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $ 4.00 a gallon by next summer and it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action.
Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea. This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read on and join with us!
By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.79 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace..not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How?
Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.
Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers.
If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!
Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all!
(If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am . so trust me on this one.) :-)
How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference.
If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK
IF ENOUGH DO THIS, EXXON CANNOT STAND THE HEAT AND THE OTHERS WILL FOLLOW.

I can remember when I had my first motorcycle gas was $0.10 per gallon and oil was $0.30 and they always washed your windshield, checked the oil, radiator and tire pressure with that. I do believe we should be looking at alternative fuels like ethanol which most venicles can burn. Trouble with that is the Saudi's have said that if the demand goes down because of that that they would lower oil prices enough to make it not profitable to continue. Can't win for losin'.

Does it really matter which company it is as long as everyone avoids the same company?
They count on disorganization so they can keep on doing what they want.
Go buy gas where you want to. I will too. We can all keep paying higher and higher prices because we will. We can keep bitching about it as we fork over the $.
Remember the (Calif) drought in the late 70's? Everyone in the Bay Area was putting bricks in the toilet tank, using dishwater to flush the toilet with, and you'd get cited for washing your car. Water company (a monopoly) said they commended everyone for conserving water but so much was being conserved that they were going broke. Rates were raised "just until the drought is over". Did the rates ever go down?
Gas costs more and more because we will pay for it. Complain all you want to as you dig into your wallet but don't do anything about it.
If we switch to some other form of fuel who do you think will be in control of that? Big oil companies that already have distribution systems or some Mom & Pop outfit. Lots of Mom & Pop outfits (like AM/PM franchises?).
Ok, I'll send this back to my Dad and he can send it back to who he gotit from and tell them that we're switching to Conoco/Phillips instead of Exxon/Mobil.
Maybe we could boycott both conglometates. I enjoy riding my bicycle. I have no problem pedalling 100 or 200 miles. I've done many many century rides, the Markleeville Death Ride 4 times and the Davis Double Century twice. I'd still like to do the PAC Tour (coast to coast in 21 days). I've still got my $2000 (1987 dollars) Quattro Assi and 80 lbs to lose.
I still think the US is purposly using-up all the middle east oil till it runs dry. Then we'll tap in to all the US oil and then you'll see high oil prices. Payback. The US will then have the monopoly.
In the meantime I ride my XS to/from work and a lot of errands, year-around, rain or shine. Wife rides her Virago or drives the Suburban (4 kids, we need the room). I buy gas at the Chevron down the street or the Valero around the corner. Been doing this for years, even before this post.
Sorry all for the long-winded ramblings

Motoman, I bought gas in Grand Junction on 4-15-06 for $2.499 at the City Market near the junction of Hwy 141 and Alt. I-70. There is a small shopping center there, don't recall the name of it off-hand. Thats a good 36 cents per gallon less than here in Rifle, distance between places is about 60 miles.
There is little relationship between the price of producing gas and the cost of getting it to the pump and the retail price. While I don't begrudge anyone making a profit in their business, I do think there is such a thing as scalping that should not be allowed. However, this country has an energy "policy" written by energy industry lobbyists, so it is entirely legal and will continue for the next several years. My prediction: Plan on $4.00+ a gallon gas by Chistmas this year. Thank your Republican Administration, House, and Senate for this gift to the energy companies.
How much do you want to bet that gas prices dip - temporarily - just before this year's interim elections?
