Looking good! You MAY want to try and install some LED stop lights someplace in the back. Trust me. automobile autopilots will NOT see you have applied the brakes if you don't light up the sky RED! I have some 4mm red LED's that are bright. I've wired them up in the Givi box on the back of the BMW, and they do help a lot.

Had some time to get to some nagging issues.
Shimmed the clutch. Cut some 3.5mm washers This is the last try to get it to stop slipping. If this doesn't work, I'm ordering the barnett springs.
Installed the ACCT using the newly discovered retraction setting. Went smooth. Had the cam cover off to double check the timing. Have not run it yet since I had the oil out to do the clutch.
Cleaned up all the middle drive bolts. Getting ready to paint it soon.
Polished up the carb diaphragm covers and screws.
Last week I installed a new dash panel that I got off ebay with the lettering still intact.
Eagerly waiting on a cartridge emulator from Mike's XS and a set of NOS Heavy duty fork springs that I scored off ebay for $18 bucks.
Busy week.Living to EXcess.

When I reassembled my bike I tried everything to get rid of slip new springs sanding plates shims but it kept coming back. The fibers were to spec but I took a chance on buying a set of fibers off EBay. They were of hard packed paper and had an article attached about paper fiber plates and the advantages. These were compatible with XS11 as well as many other bikes including the R1. My slip is gone all I have to do is adjust the clutch normal and it grips fine now and has for over a year. The $30.00 was well spent as far as I see for me. I do not think all fibers need to be replaced but I doo feel that they can go bad even if they are the right thickness.
RonTo fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

Thanks guys. I am beginning to wonder if my clutch discs are just burnt. The springs are new Versrah units. If the shimming does not work, I think that's my next replacement. No point having a heavy clutch lever just to overcome fried plates.
Ron, Do you remember what brand those discs were?Last edited by Orange4; 04-16-2015, 10:38 AM.Living to EXcess.

Shimming the clutch springs trying to create more pressure does nothing but eventually collapsing them, which in this case, no loss since they are Versrah brand.
Barrnet springs ARE your clutch disc's friend.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

Orange I no longer have any info on them, there are venders that sell them from time to time and there is a pretty good set made from Kevlar there now for about $40. Mine were copper/paper with aircraft aluminum frame and it was a Chinese company that sold them. They were R1 race product but worked in the XS1100. Mine fit perfect and slid smooth into place with no slack. Sorry I can not help more but the main thing is do not think you have to buy some $200.00 set but buy Barnett springs. To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

Big Improvements in handling...
Finally got the XJ airshocks rebuilt and cleaned up and mounted onto SwampThing...put in 15 lbs of air and it just feels soooooo good...then I wanted to lessen the dive in the front forks...turns out PVC spacers are not needed..instead it seems Randy put these adjustable spacers(dampers IDK what u call 'em) and they were set too soft so with Mark's strength we were able to adjust them to the firmest setting...now theres about 90% less dive... The bike's handling is sooo much better...the changes even smoothed out the front end vibrations i was getting at 70+ mph...Ride quality is so much improved I am actually giddy about it...1980 XS650G Special-Two

Next project is to get buy a set of flush mounted trailer lights(all LEDs) to mount on the rear of the bike...TC has a set and so does Mark...they provide excellent visibility.... also going to get some Fiamms dual tone airhorns...they'll awaken the dead...Last edited by madmax-im; 04-21-2015, 08:06 PM.1980 XS650G Special-Two

I took my 78 to Colorado togive to my son-in-law. He loves the bike. He took it for a quick ride and could not believe the power the bike has! My daughter was trying to give me gas money for bringing it out, I accepted on one condition, that they let me buy him a helmet. (He rode around the block with out one ) So now he needs to find a jacket and gloves and he will be ready.
For the next few days my wife and I will be watching my gandkids as they fly off to a friends wedding. So maybe I can sneek a ride or two inTy

Hi Ty,
I have been very happy with this supplier.
http://www.motorcyclegear.com/street/closeouts/
Some really good deals in the closeout section. They have a used section too.
Excellent value in the regular section too. I find their reviews to be accurate.

Completed final tune on the carbs. Discovered that my intake manifolds DO have leaks, which is news to me. I'll look into sealing them, or replacements down the road.
