Rode to work and noticed the third brake lamp on my trunk not working while backing into my parking spot. So new bulb and about 3 minutes of labor, and all is good. Going to take the SWMBO for a ride after work.

spring maint.
Took both tires off & shaft drive on wknd. Got the newly mounted ones this morning. Later in week will put them back on & grease drive etc. Thx TC for the front & back tire change pics etc. Was the only way I could tackle the above with confidence. Re-painted the motor (black) & exhaust (need to get that ceramic coated one year) & hey after a whole winter sitting there, I pressed the start button & it started in a hearbeat like I shut it off yesterday, & it was fogged up & everything. It never stalled or anything - what a bike & what a carb job from the Tinman905. & yeah what sound with the high revs - its just awesome with that grinning smile. Man I love these bikes - Dan'81 XS1100 LH - Midnight Special - been lookin' a long time for this one.

Today
I rode 70 miles on dry pavement, the first time since the late fall of 010.
Have a rear brake that works, as in it stops the back wheel and then releases. Still need a new piston for the caliper.
Not my bike but helped a fellow worker put his 88 1000 back together.
Tomorrow I will pressure wash Yami and tour my Island in the sun.

Man, nice work on the forks there, Ben -- shiny!
For the last few days I've been working on an idea that motoman came up with: measure and verify float heights and fuel levels in the float bowls. After replacing a broken, leaking, #3 float bowl today I got Columbo to run with a set of stock XJ1100 carburetors.
Engine started first kick while holding the enrichener with my thumb -- yay! It's raining again -- boo! Oh well. The XJ carburetors need to be synch'd and the mixure screws adjusted but they work more than well enough to ride: 22.97MM float height, 47.5 Pilot jets and 112.5 Main jets! Yee! Ha! Ha! Ha! Hah!
So I slode around town in the rain and bought some new vacuum line for my synch gauges; clear fuel line and some tees to measure the fuel levels in the float bowls; four metering needles from the local aquarium supply store to use as dampers for the synch gauges.
This evening I'll be rebuilding the carburetor synch tool, then making a fuel level checking apparatus. Tomorrow I'll see if it all works.-- Scott

Check the fuel levels
My bike runs great but, "Just one more thing!" Today I was only able to check the fuel levels in three float bowls. They're not good but that's more or less what I expected.
Clear tubing connected to the float bowl drains shows that there are different fuel levels in the carburetor float bowls.
All of the floats were set to exactly 22.97 MM float height so the fuel level check is useful.
Eventually I will need to find a good #3 float bowl for a late-style BS34III. The original got squashed and a hole punched in it during the wreck along with the rest of the XJ.
I substituted an older float bowl with just a drain plug and no nipple that works fine but I haven't been able to find the metric adapters locally for checking fuel levels in the earlier style carburetors.-- Scott
