  • I went to the California DMV to sort out the assorted registrations on my gaggle of XS/XJ bikes and to get a one-day use permit to drive my old Toyota down to the smog test station.

The bike registration was no problem for the '79 Special. It had been registered 'non-op' for ten years so registration was a breeze. As I feared, the '79 Standard would cost over $350 to register and because a lot of its parts that aren't missing are rusted or broken it's not worth restoring. Whatever is left of the XJ and the '79F after I finish removing the few remaining useful parts is getting cut up for scrap, then shipped to India to make a half-dozen new scooters and genuine Harley-Davidson frames.

I was genuinely surprised when the Toyota failed the smog test! It ran fine on the way to the test station but sometime during the prolonged idle and low speed tests it started to misfire on one cylinder and never recovered. It barely made it back home under its own power.

On the bright side: We, The People of The State of California, have offered $1,000 to scrap the car under the gross polluter program and we will probably take ourselves up on our offer so we don't have to fix the problem and get another smog test before we can sell our car.

I should be able to buy parts, repair and insure my 'new' '79 Special and the Toyota Tercel.

      • Way to go, Garth, I hope you had fun breaking in the new brakes!

I found an unopened bottle of Valvoline's SynPower synthetic DOT 3/4 brake fluid when I put the SS lines on Columbo. SynPower brake fluid has been discontinued and the new replacement fluid has lower specs than the old SynPower. I know I'll miss it when the bottle is gone.

            • fitted the original just painted handle bars
              and fairing back on,
these bars were only fitted to the 5n5 and 5k7 models
and apparently quite hard to come by.

then after taking the above pic i realized that were mirrors werent equal
to the fairing, also realized how anal i am with the bike
after doing some measuring i finally remembered i had changed the clutch lever holder some yrs ago when i removed the switch

removed the paint and gave it a quick polish
now every thing looks a lot even

now if it would only stop raining so i can go out and ride.

              • I did my winter oil change, and put in the 10W30. Found a WIX filter at O'Reilly Auto Parts, so I got 2 of them. I had been dealing with a sticking float, so I opened up the carbs and trimmed the gaskets, and played with the floats a bit. Hopefully, I won't have any more fuel leaks. I noticed that my CCT was leaking oil, so I globbed some RTV on it. My alternator is leaking oil too, so I'm going to need to change the crank seal on that side too... Not looking forward to that one.

I took the left hand control switch apart on the XS850, and got my turn signals to work! Unfortunately, the horn and headlight stopped working.

                • Pulled the carbs off and cleaned them (two sets) After putting the carbs back in and fixing the flat tires I took it (the 78) for a test ride. It was nice but not the power that I though it should have. So I pulled over and found that the right fuel line was kinked. Straitened that out and rode home... All I an say is WHOOOOHOOO NELLY , Thats more like it. Incredible amount of power with the flick of the wrist. Now I know why everyone here likes these bikes. Cant wait until Monday to get this thing inspected and registered.

Pretty much the same thing I have done for the past week or so....Rode that bitch hard! :-D Still having a blast. The roads haven't iced yet, so I see no need to garage her.

I suppose that sooner or later, icy conditions will make it unsafe to be on two wheels...maybe I should look into a snowmobile...hmmm

Rattled real bad above 5K. All good cept for cleaning up to ride in the 31st annual toy run here Dec.4. Still has all those Caly bugs on it from the rally in June. Pay TOO much attention to this bike and it will become NEEDY!
