Put the new wheel/tire combo on the 78, Also replaced the rear brake pads while it was apart. The old ones weren't that bad, but I bough a complete set of pads for JD, and she doesn't need them for now.
i rode the hell out of it today, then changed the fork tubes, and removed the old black paint off the top tree and bottom. and repainted it chrome and painted the calipers and installed sloted front disks. the back end is next.then i put my new instrument covers on and fixed my tack lights.i wish i could find a nice set of exhaust and win the bid. without some rich dude jacking it out of site. took about 6 hours after all the cleaning and wireing mess.also cleaned and clearcoated the pilot box bracket. i know, you want to see it. but seems like to much trouble posting pic. here. if you want to see it send pm and email address i'll send them to ya. I changed my right side crank seal, hopefully that will stop the last of the annoying little oil drips I get. Then I packed for the cali rally this weekend, as soon as noon hits, I'm out of here! I figure I'll put on about 1000 miles this weekend, unless something breaks!

Adjusted my buckhorn handlebars up about an inch. It did make them slightly more comfortable but I will most likely replace them. I have a fairing from a Venturer coming on Monday, so I am going to wait till that is in plce before replacing to make sure every thing clears properly. And of course went for a ride around town for about 2 hours. It seems with every passing mile I love it more.

hope you had a good ride. A combination of things, including needing to work all day yesterday and part of today, along with a dead computer that had to be replaced means that not only was I not able to go time wise, but I didn't have the money either. Hope you had a good ride.

I was always taught to respect my elders, but it keeps getting harder to find one.
I'm in San Diego for work next week but enjoying the weather. Brought SWMBO with me and went riding together on Rising Sun for first time 2 up. Rides fine and of course she likes having the trunk and rack behind her that I don't have on Great Ranger back home in Texas. Probably means I need to redouble my efforts to find one.

Today was the rig's first out of town ride after fixing the exhaust etc.
What I did besides filling the tank and checking all the fluid levels was check the tire pressures.
Seems some of last year's air had kinda seeped out of the rear tire.
The 15psi left in there did explain the different handling so it was restored to the usual 45psi.
Now I'm OK with the Russian tractor gearshift but when the rig got mebbe 25miles up the road it started to sound like one.
What I should have done before starting out was to check the torque on the exhaust pipe nuts.
#2 pipe was hanging on by one nut and that one was 3 turns loose.
U-turned and slowly puttered back home on the hard shoulder.
Hey! I finally got to use my 4-way flashers!
As most XS11 riders know, that ain't no ordinary nut.
When I got home I stole one off my son's XS750.
I'll order him a new one on Monday, at least you can still by them, eh?

I went for my first ride on my 78E since I brought her home Sept 1st 2008. Took a lot of farting around, researching, waiting for parts, head scratching, swearing, etc, But today I took it on it's maiden voyage. Still a few little things to do like mount the hard bags and buy a backrest pad that will fit the rack. For the small amount of time I rode it it smoked!!!. I can't wait to get actual insurance and plates on it and ride for real

Couple of more parts bikes of which 2 more will live!
I went for a short ride this morning to order a new ME88 rear tire at the Yamaha dealer because the old tire is shot.
The left-hand side cover emblem broke a post sometime during the ride home so I fixed it.
The headlight low beam connection on the left side under the fuel tank went bad during the rally and I didn't have a reliable headlight so I fixed that.
The tachometer went insane on the ride back down the coast during the Saturday ride. I troubleshot it at the KOA campground and discovered that the tachometer itself was bad, not the charging system, so today I replaced it with a spare (thanks, EagleTom!).
I disassembled and lubed the speedometer.
I put the volt meter back on the bike. I've missed it.
I had just put the bike and tools away when my buddy called to tell me his dog died this evening so I rode over to help him out and I just got back from helping him bury her out at the ranch. Of course he got his truck stuck within minutes of arriving at the ranch so I borrowed a tractor to lift his truck out the tree, the ditch, a rock and off a pile of dirt he'd high centered on then dug a hole with the tractor in the dark for the poor dog.
I've had for for today but tomorrow I'll start switching the needles, slides and jets in the carburetors.

Today I put on a new tire, an ME88, and put a Levi patch on the backrest pad to allow me to carry a spare quart of oil.

Put new rear pads on today during lunch at work. I work at a Toyota dealer, so I used the brake flush machine to suck out old fluid, and then refilled with fresh and bled them. No more nose-diving from having fronts only!
