  • Replaced the dead headlight relay, rehooked up the reserve lighting module. Cleaned, derusted and touched up the frame. Polished the chrome.

Put a tubeless front rim and newer Metzler tire on the front, put air in the tires.

Took it for a short ride, but cylinders 1&2 are still not doing much. They sputter, and the pipes are cold. I am going to try my other tank (known good) tomorrow to see if it is a petcock issue.

I am getting the odd backfire (gunshot), so I am also going to check the p/u coil wires.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

    • Today, got all the cylinders working, bike purrs now. Runs good, pulls to redline with very little hesitation.

However, teh 4speed tranny makes it a little whiny on the highway....

Yep, discovered it has no 5th gear. No grinding, no anything, just has no 5th?

Maybe one of the pins fell out of the barrel shifter? Mine bent the starfish washer and popped a pin when it was in 5th. It wouldn't shift down so I was stuck in 5th.

I bet you lost the pin out of the end of the shift drum. You'll need to replace the star washer (since one of the tabs probably broke off), and the pin, unless you can find it under the cover. If you feel like pulling the oil pan, it's probably down there. If not, you can just leave it in the oil pan, and fish it out later, and just put a new one in.

          • That's exactly what it was. The pin is gone and 4th wouldn't have been too long behind.

I replaced the pin and the retainer but now I don't have 3rd, 4th or 5th, unless I do some fancy footwork on the shifter.

It shifts 1st 2nd no problem, but just dead pedal going up. I did get it all the way into 5th, but I kind of have to push down on the shifter, then up to get into the higher gears. It went through all the gears, no problem when the cover was still off.

On the up side, changed the fork oil, rear diff oil, and engine oil.

On the down side, it fell off the stand and broke the Pacifico fairing.

            • I'll bet you didn't install the return spring correctly. It's what keeps the shift pedal centered after you release pressure on it in either direction.

A weak/broken or out of adjustment torsion spring (on the shift shaft) can cause symptoms like that.

I pulled the exhaust off that special I fixed up the end of last year.
Rattle can high temp paint does not hold up much better than BBQ paint.
Once I get it prepped, going to have it powder coated

                  • One of the reasons I was in there was to replace the spring. The old one was really 'soft'.

It's in there correctly and the shaft returns to center, better than it did before.

                    • Well, the only other thing I can think of is if the shift pawl was not alligned properly. The 2 gear-looking things each have a dot on them that need to be alligned with each other.

                        • Saturday I rode it, with a bunch of Hardleys. Had a high school riders reunion ride. Had 17 bikes this year, up from 6 last year when I couldn't go (before the engine change). Actually was a nice bunch of folks (can't say guys, we had both female and male) and a nice scenic ride. There were 5 Japanese bikes in the group of 17 so we kinda bunched up in the middle. But really we all enjoyed talking bikes and riding at the stops.

The bike ran good, other than annoying me with that stupid knock, but it hasn't changed sound wise or volume wise in almost 8,000 miles, so I'm really getting less worried, just annoyed. We even got wet, it's been sunny and dry for over a week and it rained on us the last leg of the ride, but by the time we got to the final destination for the BBQ we were all dry.

                          • Success!

I now have all 5 gears. Not sure why, but it looks like the PO adjusted the eccentric adjuster on the shifter so it wasn't lined up with the shift drum.

I can tell it was played with because the nut retainer fit perfectly when I adjusted it back to where it needed to be!

I felt good enough about the bike that I went and bought it it's very own new battery!

                            • Today I wet sanded the primer on a 6.4 gallon tank that I am going to mount on the midnight. It now looks good with all the dents and scratches gone. I hope to get the color and clear coat done tomorrow evening.
