    Hey Wayne,

Yeah, I took a bit of a dive in the dirt. I would have been OK except for that darn log that stopped me.

I seem to be getting better very slowly. I'll know more around the 1st of the year. Cheers dude.

      Ride soon

      Hi Russ.

Thanks for well wishes. We are getting for a cool first day, but look forward to warm riding. Spring comes sooner in South FL, but will be heading your way.

Are you preambulating again? Is bike repair coming along OK or done?

Hope to CU in the spring.

Get your picture taken at US 1 mile marker "0" and at the southern most buoy marker. Have some "Counch" chowder and Key Lime pie.

        [B]Hey all,

Looks like this weekend was the one for close encounters of the unkind!

Posting from Suches, Ga, at the VJMC/XS11 rally this weekend. We were on a nice run thru some fun twisties in N.C., Gary Granger(66) was leading, I was following, and then Marty A, and then Russ Nuthmann and others behind him.

We encountered this very sharp DRT....Decreasing radius turn, I had to apply the rear brakes a bit more than I usually do but was able to maintain and went around it.

Then MartyA came thru, hit something with his rear tire, caused it to skip, and he lost his line and just ran off the shoulder and came to a stop with a simple slide and drop, just got dusty/dirty!
Here's the marks he made coming off the road:

Then Russ came behind him, saw him off the road, was possibly also a bit too hot for the turn, hit the rear brake and locked it up, you can see his skid below:

Okay I have just read thru this thread for the first time...first off Russ I hope you are rehabbbing well from this incident..What I find from this description of how you all reacted to the BLIND DECREASING RADIUS TURN is very disturbing to me.Why?Your reaction was to brake with the REAR brake...and that is dead wrong. When you find yourself in a BDRT and you need to scrub off speed without upsetting your bike, you use the FRONT brake...its called trail braking and there is a lot written on this subject.A couple of things happen none for the better when you use the rear brake in this situation...by using the rear brake you are taking weight off the front tire when you want to have the contact patch as solidly placed as possible because you have to lean more into the corner...use of the rear brake will upset the bikes balance in the corner which it did in 2 of the 3 of you guys cases...TC you were very lucky too.. also the rear brake is the lesser of the 2 so it ability to scrub off speed without wheel lockup is minimal...So bascically the technique for Trail Braking is that you do the majority of your braking with the front brake but you do not let offf the throttle ...this enables you to scrub off speed in the BDRT without upsetting your balance. There is a host of information abt this subject on another forum I am on for the ST1100...I will go and copy the link and post it here....its a MUST read...

          Brent,

Hope you guys have a great ride . Needless to say I'm jealous as I've always wanted to ride in the Keys.

I'm in PT now for my ankle and I hope soon for my neck. If all goes well I should be 90% by end of Jan.

All my bikes are in my basement and a long staircase away from me so I have not done any work yet. I still have Feb., March and April to get things ready and if all fails I got two backup bikes .

Then my biggest problem is how to do XSEast and my Grandson's first birthday on the same weekend .

            Hi Russ,
Good to hear you are on the mend. Putting your granbdson on the back maybe not such a good idea at one
Is his actual birthday on the week end or just the party?
I hope you can make XS East.

              Advice from AbbiBrent Van Hoove:

              Dear confused,
Bring Grandson & entire party to Pocanos. Use a sidecar rig with baby carseat & seat belt. And other bikes too.

Then stay away from men carrying white coats with XStra looong sleeves.

Yeah Phil, one is a bit little but I have a good supply of bungee cords . And they do sell diapers at gas stations don't they?

His Birthday is the 24th which is Sat. so I assume the party is on the same day. I think I can work around it as XSEast this year is close by. Have a good time in Sunny FL .

I sense there is a real story lurking behind that suggestion sounds like good advice though Russ.

                      Hi Russ

                      Russ,

Thanks for info re; BMW rallies. I went to the coolest FL rally.
That Penquin on the T-shirt looks cute. Some rain at night, Then Gale force winds coming off the lake. 38 in the morning I left.
500 registered, some no shows (probably Harley riders, I heard).
13 on group ride saturday. was dry and warm except for last 20 minutes of drizzle. Rally was well organized, fed 2 meals one Steaks!

Had fun and missed some more sno & ice in Ga.

How long is that stair case to basement now?

Ardys Kellerman rode 100,000 miles last year. I bet her grandchildren live far apart.

photos show; Ardys & Kevin answering questions at breakfast Kevin's green & yellow bike on ride. 13 biikes at good lunch stop - Blackstones Landing? pointing to large square nail in Back tire. moving to "pay for air" machine. plugging tire. Ardys and me in line for steaks. A Kawasaki KZ1000 Scenes at lake show wind affects -Bent tent poles, blowing bike cover, smoke from fire blowing sideways. pedestrian wearing helmet to keep head warm. That is me with big mustache and red harley. It is a firefioghter's special edition. Any rumors you may hear about my bike being a BMW disguised as a harley are untrue. I had FUN at rally and especially on the ride. Happy motoring, Brent - back in Lilburn, GA (It was a cool ride back. I came home to snow on ground, Thankfully, almost none in road.)

Glad to hear you made the BMW rally. Sounds like a good one! Most are pretty good

Ardys is well known in the BMW community. She is quite the woman biker . I think she had an accident in FL last year when some car hit her bike. The BMW MOA put out a APB to get her help. I guess she and her bike survived.

I can get up and down the stairs now and have been turning a wrench of the FZ. Gotta get some parts and patch it up.

Good pic's. Looks like you got some new gear. See you in May.

                              Thanks Planedick.

That "other model bike" I rode does not offer near the wind protection for legs & feet that my XS1100SG does. To compensate for this, I made the lower wind deflectors. Not bad for a first effort. They do block much of the wind. It was cold, 38f when I awoke sunday morning in FL. At my house 19f with much snow & ice on road (or so I was told). I delayed my departure going to Saint Augustine for lunch and heading north around 2pm.

I believe Ardys was hit from behind while at stoplight. She was pushed into a boat being trailered in front of her. She said it was hot and she did not wear her boots just tennis shoes. Her bike was totaled, and she got a cut on her leg. she got a new bike out of it and says
"even if it is hot , wear your boots."
Says they would have prevented that cut.

Part of the ride was warm enough for summer gloves. It was a fun rally.
