  • More broken bones, but not SPIRIT!

    Hey all,

Looks like this weekend was the one for close encounters of the unkind!

Posting from Suches, Ga, at the VJMC/XS11 rally this weekend. We were on a nice run thru some fun twisties in N.C., Gary Granger(66) was leading, I was following, and then Marty A, and then Russ Nuthmann and others behind him.

We encountered this very sharp DRT....Decreasing radius turn, I had to apply the rear brakes a bit more than I usually do but was able to maintain and went around it.

Then MartyA came thru, hit something with his rear tire, caused it to skip, and he lost his line and just ran off the shoulder and came to a stop with a simple slide and drop, just got dusty/dirty!
Here's the marks he made coming off the road:

Then Russ came behind him, saw him off the road, was possibly also a bit too hot for the turn, hit the rear brake and locked it up, you can see his skid below:

Above is looking back up the road from where he came, below is looking down the road and off the edge!

When he let off of the brake the tire grabbed, and highsided him over the bike and off the road...the problem was this log that was laying there!

He had on full riding gear, boots, gloves, full face helmet, he hit the log with his head! He lost consciousness for about 1.5 minutes, but then regained it. He felt paralyzed at first, but then was able to move his hands and feet! but his right foot didn't feel right!

He was taken to the Gainesville Medical Center by ambulance, had CT scans, apparently has a few bones broken in his foot, and possibly a cracked cervical vertebrae, but is able to move everything...except his head very much due to the neck brace!
Here's his bike, mostly cosmetic stuff, Gary and Bruce went to fetch it with his trailer to bring it back to the lodge where they'll load it up in Russ' truck for him.

He's spending the night at least in the Hospital, not sure what will happen after that. I'll be leaving tomorrow AM to go home!

My buddy died high siding his last week. Almost same situation just had no helmet. Guess I will be keeping mine on, it has been a long time since I went without. Russ was lucky landing on your head can be a real bad scene.

Another serious possiblity of a face plant or head bounce is a spinal injury. Glad Russ is going to be okay. Man, this was a rough weekend or XSives.

              Now I know why

Did a group ride in the mountains around South Lake Tahoe labor day weekend. 14 bikes on unknown roads and I thought we were going too slow, but our very experience leader Diver Ray,
told me that the reason for the slow speed is because he thought that such troubles as you experienced would "ruin a good rally". Next time I won't bitch about the lack of speed on a rally run.

Good for Russ's helmet. Perhaps if Russ had better boots his foot would not have been broken? Or like with better ski boots,
your feet & ankles survive but your leg bones break instead? So get well soon Russ and slow down, eh? I must have fallen off 100 bikes in the last half century and I have always worn a helmet. And I also always landed on my arse. Is this fate? Or good karmic insurance? Or basic aerodynamics like a space capsule plowing through the atmosphere fat end first?

                            Update!

Russ is still at Northeast GA Medical in Gainsville, he has a cracked C1 vertbrae and is looking at either surgery to put a screw in, or go the halo route, neither is too good. The foot was not totally settled yet, he was waiting for an MRI when we went to see him today. Other wise he seems OK, waiting to get with Drs. and make some decisions.

                              Riding ups and downs!

                              Now easy there Prom,

Dick is right in one aspect this. Saturday, we had the larger group, some 13 bikes, all different types, Goldwings, etc., and different levels of experience. Folks are reminded to ride within their skill/comfort zone and not to try to play follow the leader or keep up! The lead rider and tail rider have helmet radios so at the end of a road, the leader waits till everybody shows up!

Sunday was the more adventureous route, and same rules apply, but it is known that this group will be running more advanced roads, but again, ride within your comfort/skill zone.

Gary was 1st on his Aprilia, I was 2nd on Godzilla and keeping up fairly well, both Marty A and Russ were on 21st Cent technology Yamaha's, Marty does like to ride close to the envelope, and just got a little loose. Russ thinks he just panicked when he saw Marty go off the road and tried to stop too quickly instead of just slowing down thru the turn!

UPDATE: spoke to Russ this evening from my home, speaking of neck injuries, he does have a fractured Atlas/Axis combo....that little nub of bone that sticks up thru the top vertebra that acts like a pivot joint, the neurosurgeon spoke with him today about options....either Halo for 3 months, or screws/pins going in thru the front/side of the neck. The orthopod wasn't able to see him about his foot today....they were busy with lots of biker incidents that weekend! Russ is retired, so no hurry to get back home, deciding on his options. Doc said, yes with any surgery there are risks, but this is probably much less risky than his choice to ride the Ga. Mountains on a bike!

Will keep you updated on his progress!

PS. Jimbo, there were 2 separate attack squirrels that tried to thwart Brent while he was leading a while, but they were unsuccessful!
