    Goodies rolling in....

    Rally Attendees,
    • Goodies from our vendor friends are rolling in now and Nancy is beginning to create the goodie bags.....
    • A couple new vendors donated to our rally while a couple prominent last year have not been heard from. Not sure the prizes will be as impressive as last year but Saturday Night will be interesting....
    • Haven't picked up our goodies from YAMAHA yet and hope they'll come through in a big way.
    • We're also going to hold a 50/50 raffle to offset some of the out-of-pocket costs.
    • I'm hopeful to get back up to Stecoah a week or so before the event to check some mileage on routes for Mike but it's looking kinda tight on my schedule.

    On a personal note:
I'm planning to come with three bikes: Ugly Duck, Dead Duck, and Montgomery. Last year one of the guys had a problem with his bike and one of mine will serve as a "Spare" should it be needed by anyone. Hate to see anyone miss riding with friends!

Dead Duck is running great and the bubbling from the R1 tank mod has been resolved completely. Not a 100% happy with my paint (a couple fisheyes) but otherwise the bike is perfect! Ugly Duck will be sporting a new seat recovered by a local expert but she's got a dead/sluggish spot about 3k that I've yet to figure out. The new Dyna's helped performance a little but this is clearly carb related. Mayberry will be staying at home while her kin are in North Carolina. Pensacola is no where near driveable at this point, next year she will be the life of the party - LOL.

    Sincerely,
    Kurt Boehringer

Thanks, Phil! After I get hold of the Iron Horse tomorrow to see if they have any bushes left to camp under, I'm going to get packed up and start the trip at the end of next week by riding up to Oregon, then kind of meander my way east from Portland.

          Hey there Folks,

Kinda late to the party, but weather/heat and "LIFE" just got in the way of me working on Godzilla AGAIN this year to get it ready for XSSE. But I did finally tear into it a couple of weekends ago, pulled the gears, dremeled 1st/4th again after 17 years/25K miles after the first dremeling. 2nd/5th still looked pristine and nicely backcut, and I did NOT do the washer swap....just an FYI!

Ran into a little snag this past holiday weekend with SWMBO having a Heart Scare event....persistent ANGINA/Chest pain radiating to left arm and neck, admitted to hospital, EKG's, multiple Heart Enzyme labs, and then a Cardiac Catheterization on Tuesday, only found ~50% blockage, nothing too severe or needing a STENT, was finally sent home and will have several medication changes to manage things to try to not let it get worse, and hopefully better.

So wasn't able to button up Godzilla then, but hoping to do it this weekend, putting the tranny pan, clutch and cover, gear shift cover back on. Also need to repair the left turn signal, and fix why the signals stopped working last year. Already fixed the Right crankcase seal(Hopefully) will find out after I get it back together and fire it up. Gotta do a little carb clean, put them back on, synch, refill the final Drive oil, ENGINE OIL, Gas Tank, etc.! THen I have to get it inspected the following weekend!

But I do have my reservations at the Tuskegee Inn for Friday/Sat/Sun nights. I plan on leaving on THURSDAY and taking my time, stopping part of the way down the BRP for the night, and then continuing at a leisurely pace Friday to the Tuskeegee Inn.

SO...George, I'm assuming you're going, when are you planning on riding down, if Thursday, want some company?? I haven't read this entire thread, so don't know if anyone else from our area is going?

Kurt, I didn't/don't have time to do a tank seal and repaint so MY gascap conversion/paintjob looks like crap, but OH WELL, as we all know we're there for the riding, not the BLING!

I'm all ready to hit the road this weekend so, naturally, the windshield cracked this evening on the last test ride.

I'm heading south to Arizona for the first leg, cracked windshield be darned but if I can find a new one, I can have it delivered here at home by next week. If that works out, I can just stop by the house and put it on before I head north up the coast for the second leg of the trip.

I plan to head over to Black Mountain Thursday for the NC CMA rally, but Irma may change my plans. Next Monday I planned to ride south from Black Mt. to Blairsville Ga. Tuesday and Wednesday ride over to Gunter Lake Alabama and Thursday ride back to the Iron Horse. The WEATHER is not looking good right now, but praying for good weather.

I'm having a little problem with Ugly Duck I may need some help with. The bike is running HOT . The only recent changes are the new coils so I'm not sure what's up with it. Plugs look good (not lean). Timing is spot on and mechanical and vacuum advance have been verified working absolutely correctly.

                    Hi Scott,
Can't remember, did that XJ have the Vetter fairing or just the shield? I'm asking cause I still have the original shield off my Venturer you could have if you were to end up passing through my location going or coming back.

Brant, I wish I could borrow your Venturer fairing but I have an Enterprise windshield by Slipstreamer.
Slipstreamer is only open Monday to Thursday so they're closed for the weekend and I can't call them.

The modern Slipstreamer Enterprise ads all show a four-hole windshield with funky handlebar mounts that needs an adapter for the XJ's square, cast, handlebars.

The windshield I have on the bike is drilled with six holes for the O.E.M. Yamaha fork mounts.

I'll figure something out; ride nekkid if I have to.

                          Hey Kurt,

Hmmm, plugs not lean, mech/vac. adv. working. How do you know it's running hot?? Infrared gun, or just lots of heat around your legs? I can't remember how much rebuilding you did to it? Did you do the Dremel fix and pull the oil pump? If so, did you use a HF Nitrile O-ring on it? If so, Scott/3Phase posted a short while back about finding his HF O-ring disintegrating. So...if the oil pump O-ring has gone bad, could be not effectively pumping the oil to the top of the head/engine like it's supposed to, which could lead to excessive heating??

Even though plugs don't look lean, have you checked for exhaust or intake boot leaks??

But isn't it still pretty HOT down there in Georgia??
That's all I got right now.

                          • Well,

This friggin' Hurricane has got me a bit worried! I remember the MONSOON weather I had to ride down there and then back home a few days later....not fun!

Also, concerned about the refineries getting back into production soon. I remember a couple of years ago with the fuel shortages! I can handle the higher prices, but not the lack of fuel itself. Anyone able to report about the fuel status up in the mountains??

Got quite a bit of work done on Godzilla today, Oil pump back in, tranny pan, clutch assembly and clutch cover, gear shift shaft seal replaced and cover on. Fixed broken left turn signal threaded shaft....borrowed one from another signal stalk I had. ALso found the no turn signal on the left side a simple fix, pulled the switch assembly and the left side wire came unsoldered from the switch board, resoldered and good to go!

I had drained the final drive oil, but has just capped the middle drive vent tube so it wouldn't leak while flipped upside down. But after doing the HOIST method instead of the flip, I hadn't planned on changing the middle drive because I had just changed/filled it last year during the rebuild. But since I had gotten some Synth 75-140 Royal Purple Hypoid, I decided to go ahead and put it both final and middle drives....since I was going to be riding the bike the many hundreds of miles down there.

And it's good thing I did, because what came out of the middle drive looked like a light Cappuccino and not 80-90 Hypoid oil! SO...I figured it must have gotten some water contamination in it from all of the rain riding I had to do. But wondering how since I had the vent drain hose well positioned down the back of the engine and out thru the frame swingarm wire bracket. The filler cap was well sealed with a nylon washer. Oh well, it's drained and I filled it with the Synth Royal Purple, hopefully that and riding it a while will heat up any residual moisture and get it to vent out!?

Also checked my state inspection station and the fellow that knows me and Godzilla will be working next weekend, so that works out well for me.

George, sorry to hear that but totally understand, I'll raise a glass in your honor.

Have more to do tomorrow, but got the major things that had me worried about both performance and inspection under my belt.

                            • I hear ya about the hurricane. Might be a problem.

As far as the middle drive oil, is your vent hose hooked up and breathing up under the seat like it's supposed to? The MD will suck in moisture from the road bad if the breather hose isn't as it should be.

                              • The rally is two weeks. The hurricane is in a few days. There is no problem finding fuel here in North Georgia.

Two weeks out is too early to predict the weather.
