Northwestern Il. rallie

Hello all

I would like to host a rallie mid Sept. 2007. I am posting to see if anyone would be interested. It would start in Rockfalls Il. (just off interstate 88) pass through exquisite Savanna Il. with it's breathtaking views of thr Mississippi River. Continue up to historical Galena Il. ( where President Grant was from) then cross into Iowa. We would then ride north up the mississippi river banks and cross back into wisconsin then head south back to rockfalls. There are some amazing sites to be seen and some great twisties to ride. Come see what this part of the U.S. has to offer (besides Cornfeilds).

Just do it, Matthew, and people will come. Lock down some dates early, start putting together a bit of an itinerary, and work on some logistics.

Here's some ideas for you:
A three day meet from Tuesday to Thursday gives folks from a long ways away, three travel days on each side, and they still only have to use one week of vacation time.

Short, local rides for Tuesday and Thursday gives the long distance folks a saddle break, and lots of opportunity for mingling.

Then you can throw in a long (i.e. 12 hour) major ride on the Wednesday.

Think about a big BBQ type event for Tuesday night, again to give lots of opportunity for socializing. That will give you leftovers for an easy meal after a long day in the saddle on Wednesday. Then Thursday night can be a large group restarant/pub event for a final night together.

It's a simple plan, but it has worked in the past.

Thanks Ken for you insite. I was not sure where to begin. All I knew is that I would love to meet some XSers in my area or from anywhere to be exact. I was thinking of doing it the first weekend of sept. What do you mean by local rides? example of adverage mile on local rides vs. long day rides. Thanks

As Ken said, plan it and someone will show up. I've driven thru part of the areas you mentioned and I have to agree, some nice country there. I particularlly enjoyed the might Mississippi between Davenport and Dubuque.

This past summer, our first ride on day 1 was a ride to the summit of Mt Revelstoke National park, a total of approx 26km. In that short distance, we probably stopped at 3 viewpoints along the way. We spent an hour or so hiking in the alpine meadows at the summit. We came down off the mountain, and rode back into town for lunch. After lunch, we rode another 20 or 30 kms to another national park site for some more hiking, photo ops. We did another couple of short ride, hiking/photo stops until about 3:30 or so, then blasted back to town to start prepping the BBQ. Day riding total was less than 200km (125 miles), with no more than about 7 hours 'on the road'.

Our day 2 "long ride" was more like 550 km (340 miles). With breakfast and lunch along the route, two inland ferry rides, three fuel stops, and one photo op stop, this day lasted 12 hours.

Thanks ken this will give me a good starting point in planning the ride. I have read through all the other rallie events posted in the past year and Know I will be able to pull off a great ride/event rallie. Only If i knew how to work on bikes. The workshop that wildcat is offering sounds like a blast ,but too cold in northern Il right now to make the stomp down to TX. - 11 without wind chill.

Was looking over hotels and there is 3 in the same block in Rock Falls where we will be starting from. Holiday inn, Country inn and suites, And a motel 6. Will be getting the prices this week.

getting ready for my first rally. I thought I could host a good rally if I first attended one. I am getting ready to leave for the meeting of the mind rally in Hurst TX. Will be leaving in 12 days. !!!! I should have more info on my event after I return!

I’ll come if I can. My daughter is getting married in Sept. so I may have conflicts. Even if I can’t go I’ll help you if you need it. I have some great ideas for routes in Wisconsin and I plan on checking the out some more this summer. Going to try to stay out of the ditch this time.

Haven't had the time to check the local motels. There are 3 within a mile of my place. Plans are not set in stone and my change a little but the dates are locked in. Going to be checking on rooms this weekend and planning the route.

I could be down for something like that. Only problem I can think of off the top of my head is that (assuming that the boss approves it) I will have just gotten back from a 3 week vacation at the end of August. Not sure how an extra 3 days will fit into my work schedule. Definitely interested, though.
