60,000 miles might be kinda a lot for a not well cared for bike, maybe the valve is hammering it's way through the seat? Could grind a couple thousandths off the end of the valve stem= might last a little while longer like that...

But .005 in clearance is not that tight for the intake vales - isn't the intake clearance .004 to .006 tho inch?

Yes, I agree with machining the valve stems/seats/new seals eventually. After you get the engine running good and have some fun with it. Make sure you pitch that modified shim in the trash at that time.

GNEPIG I’m scratching my head now. I have a 1981 SH.
          Service manual says 0.006-0.008in

but looking at the supplement section for H/SH says 0.004-0006in.

Exhaust valve clearances are the same.

            Noice! (◕‿◕)

            Just'a reminder....

The CCT adjustment procedure set forth in the repair books/manuals gots the crankshaft/valves in an INTERNAL ROTATION position wut puts the maximum amount of chain slack at the front of the engine so's the CCT can whomp up against it (spring pressure...) during the adjustment. (O_O)

Won't and wouldn't matter what EXTERNAL rotation or position the whole engine or bike was in so long as the CCT was installed. ( •_•)

Cam chain wouldn't fall off any of the three sprockets or jump any teeth. (・‿・)

But remove the CCT with the engine in an INTERNAL ROTATION position that puts that maximum amount of slack at the front of the motor whilst the motor itself is EXTERNALLY canted/angled FWD like it is when both tires are on level ground? (O_o)

Slack chain falls down and mebbe enuf to jump a tooth or two at the crank? ( º﹃º )

Cain't make gravity and chain physics NOT do wut they'd do in that situation. (-‸ ლ)

Congrats on making them wurky WITH you instead of against you. (─‿─)

Does your valve cover say YIKES on the top of it? Those must run hotter because of the emissions bull dookie= that's why the bigger valve clearance values. I remember the newer 1100s had lower cam profile and bigger vales also.

Unless I’m missing it, no YIKES, GNEPIG. Nothing on top and here’s the underside.

Intake clearance is 0.004 to 0.006" cold. Exhaust is 0.008 to 0.0098" cold.

The nice thing about using thou inch measurements is each shim size varies by .002", making calculating sooo much easier, JMHO.

Thanks guys for the words of wisdom! You’ve got me back on track now. More shims ordered, I’ll recheck all my clearances and with a little luck, bin that ground-down shim. Then button up the moto and see about syncing the carbs.

I appreciate your comments and advice, thanks again
