When I get home today i'll put a jumper from 12v switched to the black on the field coil and report back on what I find. Appreciate ya'll hangin" in with me through this-- so frustrating.

Steve, in post #42 you said that the field coil was plugged directly into the Reg. I went out to the shed and looked at the plug on the field coil that I have here and it is a different size than the one on the reg. The field coil has a 2 prong connector, the reg has a 3 prong connector. They can’t connect together. The only thing I am not sure of is what year my field coil is off of. But if all the years used the same one, then the field coil can’t plug into the OEM reg. Could you have a connector plug in the wrong place? Maybe mixed up with a different connector?

          Success!!!
it only took Deebs11 posting the schematic 6 times for it to sink through my thick skull! Jumped 12V switched to brown wire to the field coil a viola! Tach, gauge lights and a great charge to the battery.

seems like in my careful rebuild I missed a wire connection. Still not sure where, so if someone can tell me where the switched power connects into the field coil harness I would be great full.

seriously, thanks to everyone for their patience and advice..
