XS650SJ "The Black Bike", engine from XS650H with 750cc big bore kit, 30k miles

How Many Miles
I have a XS1100 80G std bought new in 83 at $3K. Now has 85K mi. I am trying to keep the miles down so it will last a few more years.
I have a XS1100 79F std bought as a parts bike 5 yrs ago for $300. Put another $300 in it. Now has 45K mi. Runs well, use for commuting.
I have a 83 Virago 920 bought new in 85 at $2.5K. Now has 75K mi. Good around town and commuter bike.
I was retired but went back to work. I commute 60 mi/day on the XS1100 79F & Virago and once a wwek for the XS1100 80G.
Use the Carpool Lane @ 40 MPG mileage, beats the truck @ 15 MPG.

Pickup coil wire fix,coils,4 exhaust,3 sets of fork seals,3 sets of brake rotors,3 sets of wheel bearing,2 clutches,1 middle gear, left and right handlebar controls,1 starter,1 seat,3 sets of fuel petcock seals,2 master cylinder kits, lots of tires, 10 batteries,1 set of carbs,3 sets rubber intake boots ,2 handlebars,1 set of gauges, clutch,throttle/speedo cables 3 times, mirrors 2 times, 2 k/n washable filter ,no transmission repair, cam chain was only engine repair it needed replacing as it was no longer adjustable. Still makes 200 mile per tank, engine does not use enough oil to notice between oil changes always used castrol 20/50 in summer,spring/fall castrol 10/40 basic car oil. Bought it brand new when I was 15, still my favorite bike. Note cam chain adjusted and valves shimmed according to Yamaha service manuel. This and frequent oil changes has given the motor its long life. I had a buddy who bought one at same time and he NEVER serviced it right neglect was his middle name but that xs1100 pulled hard right into red line even when it was using a quart every 40 miles. It was looking like a old 2 stroke when it went down the road. He got over 100,000 before it blew itself to bits ....

True enough motoman, I bought mine with 44k and the valve guides were already bad. There were a lot of indications that someone tried, but didn't really know how to take care of it. I think it was used pretty hard before I got it, and I haven't exactly babied it.1980sg-Stocker-- Sold

My XJ1100 has 26k. Bought in 1991, had 5k on it. New forks due to rust and PO neglect, valves done at 10k oil changed every 2.5k or so.
XJ750 has 14k on it, bought in 1998 with 11k. Needs clutch adjustment.
XS1100F has 48k but it could be 148k for all I know. No history on the PO but had Iowa plates on it at one time. Not running and probably will be parted out and sold on ebay. Supposedly ran before fuse blew and owner just parked it.
