  • Need new intake manifold rubbers

Hello everyone, thanks for having me, first post for me here.
I’ve been riding for more than 50yrs and have just gotten a 1980 XS1100 Special in pretty rough shape. I pulled the carbs and I can easily see the intake boots are shot. Any recommendations on replacements or tips on known bad parts? This bike is going to need a lot of TLC (yes a lot) and money too so if I can get reasonably priced good parts it’ll help. Thanks

I bought replacements at partsnmore.com maybe 15 years ago. They're still like new. A quick search didn't turn them up. Good price here: YAMAHA XS1100 SPECIAL XJ1100 INTAKE CARB HOLDERS

Welcome! Are the boots cracked all the way through? Many times it’s simply exterior cracks but they don’t make it all the way through. If yes, clean off the exterior and get a spray can of Plasti-dip, build up layers to where they have a much better appearance and it will ward off further cracking. Worked great for me, and others have done this as well.

BTW, ZRX carbs have the same spacing as the XS11... http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35462

Ordinarily I would try your suggestion but the carbs are off for a cleaning and rebuild. The rubbers are hard and fractured almost all over. Figured it would be a good time to replace them.

How do i I list my bikes at the bottom of my posts like I see so many of you have done? Thanks

Yeah, mine were cracked everywhere as well however they didn't go through all the way so it was a good fix. Rubbers were hard, however they still functioned fine.

cajun31 how are these holding up with time? I'm about to order a set. Prices are all over the place, I'm avoiding ones from China but these (from Cruznimage) look a good deal.

Tourmaster is the same as OE. They're marked ARS on the outer lip.

The rubber becomes Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_20220425_220417.jpg Views:	0 Size:	174.5 KB ID:	868525 soft and flimsy when they get hot. I won't ever buy the cheap ones again.

I modified them before I put them on. I heated them up enough to get the rubber flexible and then pulled the vacuum tubes out. I then scored the brass to give the epoxy something to grip to as well as the holes left in the manifolds. The reason was because we had this discussion once before concerning the lower cost manifolds. Even though these are indeed from Japan, I went the extra step to ensure the tubes don't leak or come out. I have had some of the Chinese ones fail while tuning the bike. The Octy tube on number two was so tight on the vacuum brass that when I pulled on it with my needle nose the tube came right out of the manifold. Needless to say I wasn't a happy camper. i had to pull the carbs and the manifolds and repair them. The ones from Japan are reinforced internally like the originals.

Yep Marty, I had to Google Tourmaster, at first I thought it was golf equipment, but it's actually motorcycle riding apparel.

Jim, the way I kept the vaccum tubes from pulling out is by using a thread die on them and then pressing them back in with some silicone sealer.

I also developed a strange issue with the Cheapo boots. They would develop a vacuum leak when they reached a certain temperature. After 30 minutes of riding, the idle speed would increase about 300 RPM more than usual. It unbelievable how flimsy they become when super hot. They may work just fine up in Canada.
