You had the mixture screw o-ring and washer in the correct order, they're fine. Since you got it, has this bike ever run mostly correctly?


The Enrichener has a problem, Pete's right, it shouldn't do that and the rubber may be bad or it could be a few other things.

If anyone has cracked open the carburetors before you got the bike, or even so much as looked at a rebuild kit online, have you checked the needle numbers on the slide needles? Held the slide diaphragms up to a strong light to look for holes? They were fine the first time I checked the carbs when I first got my XS but after a little while they had a bunch of holes.

What are the numbers on the Pilot Air jets in the intake bells? I think they supposed to be #180 jets AND the Pilot Air circuit has to be clean or it'll run rich.

Since his sig. shows it to be an 80Special, and assuming carbs are same year, those metering rod numbers need to be 5GL16. Ohh...and sorry Bonz.....dislectic and still 'mentally challanged' from that scooter crash bit me again with that order of things on the mixture screws.

NO... Don't change it. O-ring, washer, spring, screw is correct.

True, the spring would eat the oring for lunch without the protection by the washer.

There is a pressed-in jet in the carb inlet bell that should get a dose of carb spray. Make sure that the bowl gaskets neither interfere with the motion of the floats (probably not your issue) nor cover a hole that may be needed for venting.

Okay, you mentioned about some baffles, can you describe them, wondering if they may be TOO RESTRICTIVE cutting down exhaust flow which could also contribute to being excessively rich???

Also, did you put those 40's in yourself? If not, wondering if someone might have drilled them larger?? Just throwing out other ideas to check/confirm or negate!

Baffles came out of my Vulcan 1600. I put the 40s in.

Ok I pulled the baffles out. Will try it when this ****ty rain stops. Been raining here for like 5 days now.

Baffles removed run like garbage. Has low torque and still spits and sputters about 4500rpm

Another set of carbs! Trust me on this, I've had one set that I could NOT get to run properly, after almost a year of playing with them! All new Mikuni parts, clean and all seals good, everything set and checked 5 times, STILL flooded after a short ride!
