Welcome
The first thing I would check, in your situation, is the earths(grounds) connections and if the bike still has the original bottle type fuses test each fuse, out of its holder, for continuity.
A little more info on the bike may help "Us" diagnose the problem quicker1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

Batteries can "charge up" even when they are bad. They can hold a "skin charge" looking like that have 12.5 volts. The problem is that they may not have any capacity at all. You need to charge it and then do a load test to see if it is any good.Skids (Sid Hansen)

Welcome to the forum!
Double check specific gravity of the battery (flooded conventional battery) or do a load test (AGM / SVRLA) to make sure it is good.
If the battery is good and you have already checked everything else that only leaves the Ignition switch.
I think you need a schematic. Here is a thread where Shappers posted a link to the UK XS1100.com forum with his colour wiring diagram for the 5K7 XS1100

Shappers' old-shoebox site is no longer running. I have tried to contact him and the UK xs1100.com site but no luck. I did save a copy of his diagram:-

Time to get the multi-meter out and check for a faulty circuit.
I have had to repair a failed solder joint in my 80G right handle bar controls as it had an intermittent problem like yours.1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )
