    Welcome

The first thing I would check, in your situation, is the earths(grounds) connections and if the bike still has the original bottle type fuses test each fuse, out of its holder, for continuity.

A little more info on the bike may help "Us" diagnose the problem quicker

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

Batteries can "charge up" even when they are bad. They can hold a "skin charge" looking like that have 12.5 volts. The problem is that they may not have any capacity at all. You need to charge it and then do a load test to see if it is any good.

            Welcome to the forum!

Double check specific gravity of the battery (flooded conventional battery) or do a load test (AGM / SVRLA) to make sure it is good.

If the battery is good and you have already checked everything else that only leaves the Ignition switch.

I think you need a schematic. Here is a thread where Shappers posted a link to the UK XS1100.com forum with his colour wiring diagram for the 5K7 XS1100

Shappers' old-shoebox site is no longer running. I have tried to contact him and the UK xs1100.com site but no luck. I did save a copy of his diagram:-

              something to check

There is a contact above the air that failed on mine. I messed it up taking the carbs in and out on the opposite side of the fuse box

If you're positive the battery is in tip top shape then yes, the problem may be a faulty connection somewhere.

Time to get the multi-meter out and check for a faulty circuit.

I have had to repair a failed solder joint in my 80G right handle bar controls as it had an intermittent problem like yours.

Check the ignition switch connector in the headlight bucket, it can overheat and melt causing an intermittent connection.
