    Hi all,
Thanks for letting me on this forum. I purchased a 79 xs1100sg recently and have just been trolling this site for ides, answers. The bike is a little rough as it sat outside for a time. Rusty fasteners, tanks is a mess inside, carbs all mucked up.
Anyway, did the carb cleaning and yes they have been on and off a few times, not done yet. Partly due to getting the tank cleaned out properly. I did the electrolysis and that worked fairly well, although still getting some remnants of rust. I have ordered the very expensive petcock filters as they were destroyed by the neglect. I am getting rid of the octy, for now anyway until I can get it running consistently. Will most likely run dual fuel filters as well. I will be asking questions if I can't find it here.
I have parts on order, needle and seat, brake master cylinder rebuild, (front), etc... Here is a couple pics.

    Hey Tim,

Congrats on your acquisition, but we might have some bad news for you regarding the parts you ordered!

You say it's a 79 SG...that's almost an oxymoron because the 79 is an SF, the 80 is the SG. The 79 looks like the correct year based on what I can see in your photos, the more flatter seat, round chrome grab bar, plain timing cover. SO...hopefully you ordered parts for the 79 series carbs.....they ARE different than the 80-81 series carbs both in float/needles and actual floats, number of ports in the inlet bell, size of vacuum slide, etc.!!

SO....follow this link with your VIN# and verify your year!

IF it is truly a 79, then just change your signature/profile to SF instead of SG.

        Okay,

That's good to know. So...I'm guessing you got a printed manual for an 80SG instead of a 79SF?? Do you know how to access your control panel to change your profile and signature info? It's in the dark blue menu bar just above the main forum viewing windows..NOT the menu bar at the top of the page.

I can do it if you have trouble.

Your production date on the V.I.N. look at you V.I N. number. It will confirm the model year. The production year on a 79 will be mid to end of 78, 1st to mid 79. Add a year to that for an 80.

                Yes

3H3 is for a 79 SF. Look at mine in my signatire block. The only difference is the seat. Yours was factory delivered and my seat was a factory upgrade.

Yes that is my Sons 1980 xs 850 special. It is a beautiful survivor. That is what got me interested in this bike. After riding it, I had to have one. Just wasn't thinking an 1100!
Anyway, I purchased these replacement petcock filters from boats.net. Can I make them work? They are certainly different. Longer, and the tube which fits into the petcock is shorter and the diameter is smaller. Looks like it has a mounting flange.

Unfortunately, you got the filters for the standard petcocks and those won't fit your special ones. I see where you went wrong; boats.net doesn't list the 79SF anymore, only the F. But the good news is the '80SG petcock is the same, they do have the filter for that, AND it's less money.... LOL.

Nice '79 by the way; you don't see too many of these as unmolested as yours.

Thanks guys! Order placed. I am learning about the model differences thanks to you. I felt the same way about the bike being unmolested myself. Too bad they let it sit outside. Oh well.

So I got the carbs all torn down again, last time I'm hoping! Found one float was leaking, repaired that one. Found it interesting two of the floats # 1, # 2, the outside of the floats were actually concave compared to #3 and #4, which were convex. Should I be concerned? Also, the needle jets, #1,4 are 301 X-2. #2,3 are 266 X-2. I take it this is by design due to the cylinders being inboard? The needles are all the same, 5GZ6, third position from top(middle position). Main, jets are 137.5 and pilot is 42.5, 180 starter?
I performed the bench sync thanks to the article on here. Oh, and I spent over 45 minutes looking for the washer that goes on the bottom of the needle. I dropped it and heard it hit the floor, man I hate when that happens.
Here is a pic of the bowl gasket I got from Mikes. The one hole doesn't line up. Would it be OK if I opened the hole a bit or no? That hole is for the small pipe that goes up into the bowl, what does it do anyway? Any thoughts on Mikes carb needle and seat sets?
                              Thanks,
