    Just a thought from post by dbeardslee. Try taking a heat gun or hair dryer and warming up the coils to about 120F. Measure before you start, and if you can measure as they are getting warm. If you see things change, dump the coils. I would measure between the two plug caps first, and then the primary, or 1.5Ohm side.
    I've just about given up on the old coils I have. Most have less than 40K on them, but they are ALL over 30+ years old...

      +1. I haven't run stock coils on Betsy since I installed the deeply-flawed-but work-when-new black Mikes XS coils and saw the difference new plug wires and 30Kv makes over the stock 30-year-old windings and wires and 15Kv coils. I'd truly have to say that the Dyna DC1-1's are the single best upgrade I did to the old girl. With the hotter coils you notice the difference the first time you hit the starter.

        Yeah, that's about where I'm at. I'm going to try and get a set of Honda VFR coils from the salvage yard here next weekend. That's what Brant says he has on his Venturer. If they fix it I may order a set of these.............

          If you go the Dyna route, I recommend getting two pairs of 2" by 5/8" corner braces (I get mine at Ace Hardware.) Cut the outside holes off, round the cut ends off so they don't rub through wires they may come into contact with, and drill the holes out to 1/4". Get two 1/4-20X2" hex head bolts and two flange nuts, and four 1/4-20X1" bolts and nuts. The four hole corner braces seem to be a bit thicker than the two hole variety, and with a 2" bolt and flange nut they'll fit perfectly and they won't loosen up.

          Bend the bracket for the ballast resistor as close to the frame as you can get it so it's out of the way. A big, long phillips screwdriver and a hammer work well for this. Put the corner brackets in place and attach the nuts, but don't tighten them yet. It's much easier to get the coils into position with the brackets loose so you can move them around as you maneuver the coils into place. Set the coils in place and bolt them to the brackets. Then use a 7/16" crow foot socket to reach in and tighten the bolts that hold the brackets to the frame. I've done this several times now, and if you use the above hardware they'll fit perfectly and you'll have just enough room to do the final tightening with the crow foot socket.

            Why not just buy the Dynas? You'll save the expense of temporary coils, and even if the coils don't turn out to be the problem, they're still a HUGE improvement over the stockers.

              I have 3 other project XS's in the garage that need coils. I'll use them somewhere.

              Besides, it $40 instead of $140 just to see if it works and they are right here.

                I've had four sets of coils in Betsy - the stockers, black Mikes, green Mikes, and now the Dynas. I put a set in my brother's bike too, and they work just as well in his. For me these are THE coils to use.

                They're brand new so there's no worrying about getting a used part that may or may not work properly, and I can wire them with a cheap set of universal 7mm solid core automotive wires. I spend about $10 on a universal wire set, and I can rewire three sets of coils with one set of automotive wires.

                I understand what you're saying about $40 vs $140, and money is always an issue. But here's my prediction - If you wind up getting a set of Dynas and installing them on one bike, you'll soon have three other bikes you'll want to put them on.

                    Check the guts of your mufflers. It can give you fits when they wear out.

                        I use NGK Iridiums - BPR6EIX IIRC. They're only available with resistors, so I run NGK non-resistor caps. If you stick with the stock BP6ES with hot coils you'll want to open the gap up to .035.

                        The Iridiums come pre-gapped, and they tell you not to mess with the gap since it's pretty easy to break the brittle and slender iridium electrode. I really like them, and I'm convinced they're about as close to a foul-proof plug as you're going to find.

                                Been rechecking wiring and waiting to get my hands on another set of coils. stereomind picked me up a set off of a CB750 today from the salvage yard. I gotta get out to his place and pick them up. I gotta talk to motoman to see what plugs to run and see if I need some different wires.
