I've been vacillating for a long time about ditching the Octy ... in the foreseeable future (unless I can come up with a really good reason to ditch it), I'll be keeping mine as well ...

It's a safety device. Once you get it properly plumbed, it's no big deal having it on there. I've had two failures, and both times, it failed open.

+1 on what Marty said, except for the failures. I've only had 1 failure, and it was just a dribble.

Mine is working properly. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have the extra room in there (without all that extra plumbing) ...

But then the idea of having that extra safety measure comes back to my mind, so I keep the Octy.

If you have a hanging idle you are running too lean. If after the change in valve shims, you experience the same problem, then you are running too lean mixture. Can burn up an engine, so be sure about your settings. check your plug color too.

Actually I'm on the rich side. I'll get my shims right and re sync and go from there.

Where are you too rich? At idle, wide open throttle? How are you checking? Many ranges to these carbs and all interact with each other.

I'm good on fuel mixture throughout all 4 ranges. I have colortune and check my plugs regularly. I'm good with carbs and fuel mixture ratios. I know I'm not lean cause I set it up to be more on the richer side trying to compensate for the hang idle. I should also mention that it is fine when cold and only does this when it's warm which is why I'm leaning to my valves. I had just never checked them. I'll post a reply tomorrow after I get everything back together tomorrow and let you guys know if valves was my issue or if we need to start rechecking things.

                          Thanks for all the imput.

                            solution

i've noticed with many forums, not just this one, that people do not put the solution to the issue after they solved it. sooooooo....

it turned out that my valves were all .05mm too tight. so i went to the local stealer dealer adn picked up some shims.

got everything back together and shes runnin like a raped ape and doesnt have a hanging idle issue anymore.

only problem now is that my 2nd gear is having a some trouble with the new found power... more on that later.

but i am very appriciative to the info that everyone provided as i am new to this forum, and new to the bike. my first yamaha and my first inline 4. couldnt be more happy with it!

                            HAPPY TRAILS!!

Go VERY LIGHT on second gear and it MAY take you through this season. It's a known problem that Yamaha didn't fix until 1986, and the second generation on the VMax and Venture. They used the transmission out of the XS11, so think about that.....
The fix CAN be done in a weekend, but you MUST take it easy on what is there now to make it easy. The shift fork WILL go quickly.
Enjoy the bike, just wait until 3rd to jump on it.
Oh, and for racing, I tell everyone put it in your highest gear, slow to 25MPH, and then we go. NO ONE is willing to try it?!?! Alway's go to your bikes strong side...
