Thanks Grant, I still cant get the lights of the trailer working and even if I did I dont know how to keep the bike upright in the trailer. This shop is down the street from me and I just want an overall assessment done to point me the right way. they picked up the bike today and I was kind of sad, but happy that she'll be back and in better shape hopefully. I'll keep ya posted

It also looks like it is a gas soaked and shrunken K+N filter that does not fit well. Go to the K+N site and ask to speak to a rep or email them a question. They will replace that puppy with a brand new one on warranty. They do not care if you bought it or it came with the bike you bought. All they require is a picture of your existing filter.
They are awesome about this....trust me. I have pointed more than a few this way and every single one was honored on warranty.
PS. You have to fix the gas leak that caused it to happen. Not their requirement but a suggestion.

I'm up to my butt in aligators right now anyway. Was going to take a break and donate a couple days to your bike but my right knee is the size of a watermelon right now from over use, doing floors and stuff in this reno. Need to take some time away from the tools and the shop and just get on a bike for a few days. Anyway I have a couple questions for you (father inlaw).
When the engine was swapped, did the entire motor intact get mounted. I'm curious about the pickup coils and if the doctor remembered to also transplant an 81 TCI with the motor. Andreas has the right TCI if you need one. This is an important part of a heart transplant as as ignition wise, these components need to be able to talk to each other. The TCI is the interpreter. I know you don't have the bike close to hand but if you could swing by the shop and take a picture, we could tell you if you need to contact Andreas or not. The TCI is a black square box ( aprrox 4x6x1 inch) located under the rear of the seat and attached to the rear fender. It will have two multi wire connectors running into it.

You want the OEM headers to graft onto. If so, you can get a center stand from Andreas.

Sadly the garage said it was too much work. They recommend an entirely new electrical harness, they found water in the engine, they got it to turn but it was half power? or something. This kinda blows.

Fix the harness

On the trailer and bring it up to me. If it will roll over with the plugs out. It's already a 100 percent better than what i've been dealing with. I can't convince u paul but most shops don't have tools as old as these bikes. Let alone someone who knows these machines. Best knowledge is right here and forget the $$$$ pro's.

Made the trip up to see Mack yesterday. Glad I did. His man cave is an xs1100 enthusiast's wet dream. We checked my bike out and it wasn't the pile of junk the shop told me it was. Wiring harness doesn't need to be scrapped and the engine water damage isn't that bad. There is some light at the end of the tunnel. I've got a shopping list of parts to buy, and I'll go back to see Mack and get closer to making the bike run. Thanks Mack!

Was thinking last night that you should also buy the caliper pistons for an SF, both fronts are a little smaller than the rear so there will be two different part numbers( order 2 fronts and 1 rear stainless steel if you can get them), also go to Napa and buy new exhaust studs and nuts. If you search here, someone will know the exact kit to get. Apparently it comes with all the studs and nuts needed.

The stud kit is for a late model chevy small block exhaust. Dorman 03411 Exhaust Manifold Stud and Nut is the kit that works.

what are these screws called??? You know, the pointiest screw in the carbs that is longer and pointier than all the others? Well all of my screws were a little bent out of shape so I need 4 new ones. I believe my 79 SF is using Mikuni BS 34SS carbs, so what would the pointy screws be called? I've been searching online for 3 days and not getting any closer to identifying these screws. They seem to have a different name on every website I visit.

A thread on this website a month ago said Yamaha did not assign this screw a part number. Mikuni should have an number for it, I hope.

If you have the early type carbs (78-79) with the pointy idle mixture screws, the ones in the link won't work, they are for the later carb (80-82).

Edit: The carbs you have in the picture above are the early type. I can tell by the large idle adjustment screw at the rear.

Hey Blank Slate,

With the 81 engine and carbs, then the pilot screw you found is the correct type....fits into the recessed pilot screw tower. The earlier carbs take a different type because they are externally fitted...similar to the #584 type on Mikes Page.

Most folks don't bother putting the DUST CAP plug back in...a real PITA. What's surprising is that the other kit WITHOUT the dust plug is more expensive than the kit you showed!
